My 15 mo. old son's soft spot is still there and his head is in the 95 percent. Something wrong?

His 15 month check up was a few weeks early and he was not checked by his regular doctor. Head size hasnt changed much since his last check up and his moms side had big heads. 15 word vocabulary and he is active but he doesn't walk well yet. 5 steps before he goes to crawl. We were in a small room for the last 7 months and he just didnt get much opportunity to practice walking. Now have a 2 br place and he has his own room and loves to walk holding one hand or grabbing things as he goes. This new doctor is asking for thyroid blood test and possible a cat scan while he is sedated. Everything I've read said it can take up to 2 years for a soft spot to close and no doctor has mentioned any sort of concern at any prior check up. Ill get the blood test but am scared to have him sedated w/radiation exposure just because the new doctor walks in and expresses concern. Is it ok to wait it out a while longer to see his walking get better and soft spot close more or is it all of a sudden urgent?

Answer:
Every child is different and every child grows and adapts at his own rate. If your other doctors have not voiced any concern, I wouldn't worry about it. Before you put your baby through a battery of tests, either get a second opinion and or have someone at a day care center you trust to spend some time with him and see what THEY think. Sometimes, developmentally speaking, the child care providers are a better judge of how a child is doing, rather than a doctor because of the number of kids they work with long term on a daily basis. You might also consider letting your boy go to daycare half days just to get him stimulated and around other kids who are learning to talk and walk. It really does work wonders for their socialization.

My daughter is almost 4 and still has about a dime size soft spot on her noggin... her doc says it's closing slowly, and is smaller each time she sees her, and to not worry.
My son's soft spot wasn't completely closed until 2 years and when I expressed concern (at around the same age as your son) our pedi told us that the soft spot actually takes 2 years to close.
Why did you change doctors? The first this you should do is go back to your regular doctor (or another new one) and get another opinion before having anything done and getting too worried.
Meanwhile, remember that each child is different and some toddlers do not walk until 15 or 16 months. Good luck.
The soft spot on a babies head doesn't close till 2 years and sometimes not untill 2 1/2 years. No need to worry at all. My sons soft spot closed exactly at 2 years and my daughters closed at 27 months. I think your new doctor is just trying to make some extra cash because If it were to close to soon it would cause a deformatiy of the skull and could compress the childs brain so tell the doctor that you would like a second opinion before you put your child through such a tramatic experience. Good luck
My daughter is almost 18 months old and her soft spot is still large (bigger than my thumb..) My 3 year old's was closed by now..

My doctor doesn't seem concerned..and it is getting smaller. I was told it's much better to have a large one than one that closes too early. HTH.
