Riding home from shopping in a cab. No carseat, what do I do with the baby?

He's now 19 months, and we've had to take a cab home a few times when we found out we had too many bags (or items too large for the bus). What do I do with my son. I've held him before, and I've buckled him in once. Lately I read an article about booster seats and how little kids can be cut right in half if they don't use a booster because of where the belt sits. Is it safer to belt him in, or hold him? And what do I do when baby #2 is here and I have him/her in a snuggli carrier? I only want to do what's safest for my kids.

Answer:
OK this has happened to us before and we did a ring around of all the cab company to see what they have to offer and we found 1 in our city that was able to offer a car or booster seat on request, all we had to do was either book before hand or Ring and ask for one we some times had to wait a little longer for it to arrive but it was worth the wait for out little ones safety
good luck hope this helps
It sounds like you either need to hire a babysitter when you go out, or buy your own car. If you wants what is safest for your kids, their own carseat is absolutely the safest way!!
i take you dont have a car and cant afford to get one. if i was you honestly i would tae a booster seat with me put in a shopping bag to take along. that way you dot have these worrie. as far as #2 you will most ef. have to hav a car seat. i honestly cant believe Taxi drivers let you ride without them. to be safest for you kids buckle them up the right way!
my son is 21 months old and me being pregnant again we cab everywhere, i usually sit in the back with him on my lap. or the taxi driver doesnt move the car until i sit him down in the middle and put a seatbelt on him. which i am uncomfortable with ..but safety first,,,,
Hold them on your lap.straight, facing foward, and put the seat belt around the both of you.
I can't believe you're allowed in a cab without a carseat. And with a newborn...a carseat is an absolute must. It's illegal to hold a baby in a moving car!
in some states, it is illegal to NOT have your child in a carseat. my suggestion is to find out what the law is first before you take the kids out again. i don't think anyone would want you to get your kids taken because of child endagerment or something of that nature.

other than that...maybe looking into a family member or friend as an alternative to taking the kids with you...they may be willing to watch them for free or minimal fee...or you could just cook them some supper for payment :)

GL, and I hope everything works out for the best for you and your kids

God Bless
Even 10.5 years ago, when my daughter was a baby, you could order a cab with a car seat. Do a little research ahead of time and find out which companies around town offer carseats. For the new baby, perhaps you can get a travel system type seat, so its a stroller and seat that you can just buckle into a cab after you are done shopping.

Another option might be to network with some other moms and take turns watching each other's kids or sharing cars when you need to go shopping. That way, you can use your own carseats to keep your babies safe. my friend and i did this when our babies were young. She had no car, so I'd come pick her up she'd strap in the baby'y seat and give me a couple bucks for gas (way cheaper than a cab!-) Then we'd have company for shopping too!

Unrelated, but my uncle died in a cab accident. They are not any safer than a personal car and carseats should be required for any passengers under the legal limit for seatbelts (Which, in my state is 6 years and 60 pounds!)
find a cab company that provides stage 2 carseats for you... ask various ones...
If you get pulled over in that cab for some reason. You will get an improper child restraint ticket and it could even go as far as child endangerment. Get a small booster seat for the oldest one they also make very light weight carseats. then get a stroller the bus will or should allow you to take both on if you need to get a cab you have to be prepared for the saftey of your children.
You have to have a car seat. Thats why social services wanted to crucify britney spears. becasue she held the baby on her lap and didn't buckle him into a safety approved car seat. can u bring a seat with you on the bus?? then put it in the botton of the cart while u shop.? good luck!
They sell clips that can adapt a seatbelt to better fit your son, I recommend looking for one online or at a baby store. For your second child: they sell carseats that turn into strollers (usually used by people who fly a lot) I recommend looking into buying one of those and taking it along to use as a stroller.
IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO HAVE A CHILD OUT IF A CAR SEAT UNDER 80LBS. I was just in a head on colusion and the only reason my children are still alive is b/c of the car seats. you should get hooks for your stroller and take a walk to the market daily please figure something out i am worried for your childrens safety
if you order a cab, then ask for one with a seat in it, some carry them in their boots
In Houston, many cab companies will provide a carseat if you call them and request it. Otherwise, I think holding him is better, he is too young for a seat belt to do any good.
I am in the same situation. I would under absolutely no circumtance take my baby in a cab without a carseat. I was in teh same situation though. I had to go to the store to buy groceries I had to take the bus..I saw somethings I really wanted but couldnt bring...so I didnt buy them..but had I really wanted them then I pay for them put them on hold and come back for them later. A huge major pain. I agree. But safer then riding in a cab with no car seat. When baby number two is here..then you simply get a double stroller with lots of storage or else a single stroller and one of those carts (old ladies push them all the time) that can fit a lot of items in them.
