Any tips on self-feeding?
Answer:
That's not a problem. He's still young, and he'll get better. At that age we were still giving our oldest "clean" food (spaghetti with tomatoes instead of sauce, etc) that she could easily eat with her hands. He won't let himself starve...as adults we just forget how very tiny their stomaches are. Would he notice if you didn't offer him a spoon or fork at dinner instead of taking it away when he got messy? That way he'd just use his hands from the beginning. My oldest just turned 3 and she only got really interested in trying to be serious about using the utensils correctly a few months ago. It's probably different for all kids. Good luck!
Try filling the spoon, give it to him and guide it towards his mouth. Also, try showing him how you eat, maybe he will try to imitate you
He is doing GREAT! That's exactly what they do at that age. Now if he is 3 and doing that then you have problems.
kids learn at their own pace. there is no way that a child that isn't even a year and a half old should be expected to feed themselves with a fork and spoon. he will do it when he is ready.
The best way for kids to learn is practice. Try letting him hold a spoon while you are feeding him. It will be very messy for a while yet, so try putting something underneath the highchair to make clean-up easier.
Sounds like he is doing just fine but if you really want to try speeding up the learning process here is a tip. They make a yogurt that will not "spill" when the spoon is tipped upside down. I can't remember who makes it but I know they use Dora. Try teaching with that. Good luck.
