Anyone decide not to go back to work after having first child?

Just wondering... I love my job, but maybe want kids someday too. I don't want to give up (a) to do (b)... I've heard that priorities like this go out the window after having a child. Did anyone here totally intend on going back to work, but end up staying home instead? sometimes, I know, daycare is so expensive that it doesn't make sense for both people to work ... ?

Answer:
I just graduated college and I intended to go to work after my son was born, but here it is and he is 1 (next wed) and I am still a stay at home mom. Now I am debating my deicision though. I love having my time with my son, but to me... I dont feel like a person anymore. I don't know if this is right for me.

I am also having trouble finding a daycare otherwise I would not have had to turn down 2 jobs this week alone!! Plus you have to figure out how much child care is and what you will make and if it is a good choice.

Good luck
No , i`m a single parent and have no choice but to work. You are lucky to have the option.
I didn't go back, then I found out I was pregnant again (right away, lol). So I had to in order to pay for the second one. My girls are 10 months apart. Then when they were 3&4, I quit for good to stay with them, then they drove me crazy and I found a part time night job. If you can handle being home all day with no adult time, go for it, but I needed to get out some
Today it is clear kids need their mom or dad to stay home until they are of school age. Maybe for 3 years. The sooner they are in school the better...
One of my friends, stayed home after having her baby. Best decision ever. Her child is happy & healthy. -- Unfortunately, those who took their children to Day care,... their babies ended up with a broken hip (only 3 months old!)..., a broken leg (a 2 yr old)...which the "care takers" NEVER NOTICED the child NOT moving at ALL! ..or they could grow up with abandonment issues..-- Take care of your children if you can, or a loved one if you have to go back to work. STAY away from Daycares, kids get sick all the time, and all they make them do is NAP most of the time! (At least in my experience).. There is nothing like a mothers love (or grandma's!) -- Give the kid time at least to walk or talk, so you know what goes on while he/she is in Daycare.
I planned on going back just part time so i could get out and do grown up things, but my little guy is six months old and i am not feeling the whole leaving him with a sitter or even family thing, so I will stay home atleast until he goes to school. plus then you have to pay for a sitter, so you are working to pay someone else to raise your child
i didnt go back to work until my daughter was 10months old. It gave me a chance to grow with her and learn her flow. I think you will know when the right time is to go back. Because situations change after you have kids. You can make plans, but be ready to make a few adjustments. Daycare is cheaper the older they get.
I thought I could have my cake and eat it too. I was sooo wrong. It is impossible to have a child or children, a marriage, a job and keep a house and life. Something is going to suffer. Not enough rest or sleep, the children most of all, neglecting your needs and our husbands as well as the house. In the long run others will have raised your precious children who grow up in a blink of an eye. You will never be able to get those years back. I worked part time and went to school part time and there were no dinners with the family, only on weekends and the children got away with seriously horrible things because the sittets could care less. Never again. In my opinion mothers are needed at home.
I didn't go back to work after I had my daughter. She is now 17 months old and I don't plan on going back until she is in school. It is better for the child for a parent to stay home. They benefit developmentally much more than a child whose parents leave them at daycare all the time. I agree with the other answer, stay away from daycares! My friends bring their kids and they are ALWAYS sick or bruised or bitten. People don't care there and they don't have the ablilty to show the love and affection that babies and toddlers need for a healty development.
When I had my baby I was tending to go back to work only the last week of my leave i put in my notice i wanted to be home with the baby i just couldnt hand her over to some daycare worker i never knew and trust them with something so precious. Sometimes it gets rough with the bills but with daycare cost anyhow it would still be the same, although you get the daycare money back at the end of the year I just wanted her to myself. I dont plain on having another and every second is an important part to me.
I am working through this issue right now. I have a beautiful 10 month old son. I wanted to stay home longer, but only had 9 weeks with him . (I was on bed rest for some of my maternity leave time) Now I am working full time with a daycare that we love. You can find good ones out there. My son loves going and is learning a lot.

I was just offered a job with flexiblity-32 hours a week so I have two afternoons off. I think I'll take it. Still have daycare but eight extra hours a week is great.

Point is-you won't know until it happens to you. I was excited to go back after my maternity leave in a way-I need the stimulation. Hoping this new job might be the solution. Unfortunately, it's about 35% of the salary I make now, but my son is more important!

Good luck.
