Is there a website for all the carseat rules??

my son is 17 pounds and 4 months.he's fine and healthy. dr said no worries about his weight, so comments about him overeating aren't necessary (thanks:)

anyway.he will outgrow his infant carseat before he hits 1 year.so, what are all the rules about the car seats so i can figure out what i need to buy in preparation for the 20 pound mark.
no offense to your answers, but i'd rather read the info from a reputable website than take strangers' words for it!

thanks all!

websites please!

Answer:
Okay I was just in a head on colision with two infants in the car I found out you can go to the local highway patrol office or to your insurance agent and they will install the seat for you and make sure it is right for you car they have all the statitics and all the info you need to make the right choice
I dont think that there are hard rules for this, but this is what we have been looking at for our son, who is in the same situation as yours.

Well of course the law depends on where you live buy WHY it is safest to remain rear-facing is not.

Very good article, you should read the whole thing:
http://babyproducts.about.com/od/carseat...

"Rear-facing is safest for both adults and children, but especially for babies, who would face a greater risk of spinal cord injury in a front-facing carseat during a frontal crash"
http://www.car-safety.org/rearface.html...

"Once your child is at least 1 year of age and at least 20 pounds, he can ride forward-facing. However, it is best for him to ride rear-facing until he reaches the highest weight or height limit allowed by the car safety seat."
http://www.aap.org/family/carseatguide.h...

"Infants who weigh 20 lb before 1 year of age should ride rear facing in a convertible seat or infant seat approved for higher weights until at least 1 year of age.3,4 If a car safety seat accommodates children rear facing to higher weights, for optimal protection, the child should remain rear facing until reaching the maximum weight for the car safety seat, as long as the top of the head is below the top of the seat back."
http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi...

"Convertible safety seats: These seats can be used in both rear- and forward-facing positions. The seat needs to stay in the rear-facing position until your child is over 1 year old and has reached the highest weight allowed for the rear-facing position (usually about 30 pounds, but may be more or less depending on the car seat). Anyway there is loads more if you want to keep clicking links:

The bottom line is rear-facing is always safest in any moving vehicle. In fact, in case of an airplane crash Flight Attendants are the safest on the plane as their seats are usually rearfacing. If you think about it, the car is moving forward. No matter what happens in an accident at speed, even being rear-ended eventually all forward momentum will stop and that force will be transfered into your body. You will be thrown towards the front of the car, what is safer? To be thrown into a strap or to be pushed into a seat back that keeps your spine relatively aligned? Although in most accidents there will be some sideways force as well, the most of the force tends to throw you towards the front of the car.
If you google "safety regulations car seats" there are a few different sights that talk about standard regulations and safety tips. You can also search "car seat recalls". There are websights that offer a list of all of the car seats and models that have recalls on parts. It's pretty scary actually!
I know you don't want any tips, but just a quick one, you can get a stage two up to 65 lbs or a three in one that turns into a booster as well.
