Answer:
hi there. i know this is a very frightening time for you and your family, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. My daughter was only 4 weeks premature but was in NICU for almost 2 weeks due to respiratory failure. She was on a respirator for several days and on more meds than I can even begin to name. It seemed that she only went down hill everyday and then one morning after her evaluation, her neo told us that she had made a drastic improvement through the night and was WELL on her way to being able to go home. They couldnt really explain the sudden change but we were AMAZED AND SO HAPPY. We got to take her home 13 days after birth. After being at home for only a week, I noticed that she seemed to be retracting a WHOLE lot again (pulling in the chest), her eyes seemed very sunken-in, and she seemed to be breathing pretty fast like she wasn't getting enough oxygen. I also noticed that she had been pretty congested for a day or so. I took her to the ER and was so glad I did b/c after checking her O2 levels, they were only at 68 instead of 99 or 100. They immediately tested her for RSV and she was diagnosed as having a very SEVERE case of it. They admitted her to the hospital immediately and she had to go through so much. I was so scared for her and hated seeing all the tubes on her again. She had to be deep-suctioned about 6 times a day and suctioned through the nose every hour. She was put on breathing treatments, and administered several meds through an IV in her head (for the second time). THIS WAS SO HARD TO GO THROUGH. She had to stay in the hospital another two weeks and eventually had a full recovery. I am glad to say she will be 2 next friday and is VERY healthy now. She had to go through so much as a preemie but she fought every step of the way and prevailed. Your grandson will do the same. I hope this experience of mine will help to ease your worries somewhat. I will keep you and your family, and most of all your grandson in my prayers. Good Luck and god Bless!
Ps I am also a NICU nurse and see this type of thing all the time. I am happy to say that mostly all the cases like this that I have seen (and trust me, some have been REALLY bad) have had happy endings.
I don't have my own experience to share but a friend did when her son was first born. He was a term baby but he developed pneumonia from RSV. It was a worrisome experience for his parents but he is now a very healthy 3 year old boy.
I will pray for your grandson.
I just wanted to tell you how upset I feel about this. I'm so sorry. This is seriously making me cry. My son just turned 6 months old. When he was a month old he went to the hospital for a week with a bladder infection and I thought it was the worst thing. It was so hard seeing my son in the hospital when all I wanted to do was make him feel better and take him home. Reading what you just typed makes me feel so lucky. I am truly truly sorry for this situation. I wish I could help. There's nothing worse than hearing things like this. No baby should every feel pain or sickness. You family is in my thoughts. Good luck..
I used to work in a children's hospital and took care of many premature babies with RSV. It is very common with preemies. You just have to get through this time and pray for the best. When you go home put that baby in a bubble! Don't bring him out in public or have anyone with a cold come over to the house! Have good hand washing and keep a clean sanitary house. I am sorry you have to go through something I will keep you in my prayers. Good luck to you and your family. Stay strong your family will need your strength. You can try googling more info about RSV and NEC on the Internet.
