Does the antibiotic Amoxcillin affect your milk supply?

I am breastfeeding my 2 month old son and I have an infection and I was given Amoxcillin for it. Will it dry up my milk supply? Can anyone help?

Answer:
Amoxicillin is safe to take while nursing and does have the posiblity of affecting milk supply, but the answer is vague.

From babycenter.com:

Although many medications are safe to use while breastfeeding, almost any drug will get into your milk to some degree and can occasionally affect your milk supply. To be safe, you should always check with your child's doctor before taking any kind of medication, even over-the-counter drugs.
Not all all. Nothing like drying up the milk, If you have taken the antibiotic on Doctor's advice, its ok. No problem. Did u say that u are breast feeding to Your doctor.

If it is on Doctor's advice, its ok. But some antibiotics are somehow dangerous to take as they affect the child definitely as it will mix up and go to the child when u Breast feed. Ok.
No, this will not affect your milk supply.
Make sure you drink added water while taking any meds and breast feeding. And no dear it will not dry you up.
I would call your doctor and ask because everyone is different I took it while breastfeeding due to a severe ear infection after tube fell out and it didn't hurt my baby but he certainly never got sick 3wks later when everyone else had the flu...
I've never heard that it will dry you up. Antibiotics usually will end up in breastmilk, though. Some people can be allergic to amoxicillin, so make sure that your doctor knows you're breastfeeding.
From what I've read, amoxicillin is safe to use while nursing. A great website for everything having to do with breastfeeding is http://www.drjacknewman.com.

Here is a chart that shows typical meds that are safe to use while breastfeeding

It also has a chart that list meds where they are not sure about the effects and probably shouldn't be taken while breastfeeding.
You should be fine supply wise, when I breastfed my son I was on it for a while due to a breast infection and also some surgeries I had, my milk did fine. It can however be passed through your breastmilk to your son and cause him to have loose stools. My doc told me that would be the only side effect for him if he got that, which he did. Just make sure you keep breast feeding so he doesn't get dehydrated if he does get icky diapers. Its good for you and for him. Congrats on making it to 2 months feeding!
