What are the important things to buy for a newborn baby?

those flannel lap pads are a must have

tylenol (you will need this for all shots)
Pampers/Diapers---they will go through thousands so the more the better.
recieving blankets, onesies, bottles, diaper bag , diapers, pacifiers, socks, there are also baby toboggans that help them stay warm , and tshirts with mittens to keep them from scratching their face, good luck
A crib, a dresser, a changing table, and a rocking chair, for starters. The furniture is the foundation. Oh, and a carseat. (Safety first!)
Gotta feed the baby! For formula fed babies- bottles, nipples, and a bottles brush. (I personally recommend Gerber Comfort-grip bottles and comfort-latch nipples.) A bottle warmer also comes in handy if you make some formula ahead of tim & store it in the fridge.
Breast-fed babies: mom needs nursing bras, nursing pads, and I REALLY recommend investing in a Boppy pillow. Also a breast pump (the type depends on how often she will be using it), milk storage bags, and again bottles, nipples, & a brush for cleaning. And all babies are going to need burp cloths!
Diapers and wipes!! A wipes warmer is a nice convenience, but not necessary.
Then clothes. The best recommendations are onesies (lots and lots of them), sleep'n'plays (also called layettes- basically feetie pajamas), and blanket sleepers (in feetie or sack-type versions).
That covers the bare basics, but there are many other items i found useful: a baby carrier or sling, a bouncy chair, a swing, and a toybox. (Trust me, if you have relatives, the baby WILL be getting toys.) A pack-and-play and obviously a diaper bag is essential for travel. Soothing CDs. A CAMERA!! Digital is best, allowing you to preview the pics. Also, pacifiers (if you're not opposed to them), baby washcloths & hooded towels, a baby tub, baby wash, lots of blankets, in all shapes and sizes. And if possible, acquire a travel system (a stroller & infant carseat combo). That way, when they outgrow the infant careseat, you need only to make one more purachase of a combo toddler/booster seat.

to use it properly)
-- Baby aspirin or Tempra to bring down any kind of fever

-- diaper shirts or "onesies" that won't untuck from their

That's really the bare essentials. Other things you buy that may seem essential to others may not be as essential to you, depending on your budget. Those might include:
