What should lmy 8 month old baby's poop look like?

I know the eternal question mom's have is about poop, but it seems hard to get a clear answer? My 8 month old daughter has been on solids for about 6 weeks. Her poop is definitely more formed than before (she was and is breastfed.) She strains and gets red in the face when she goes. She goes about once every other day. Sometimes she pushes and nothing comes out. When is does is tends to be dark brown (sometimes green, maybe almost black.) Sometimes looks like a soft paste, other times like a log (kinda like adult poo). Is she constipated? When do I call the doc? Please help this first time mom!

Answer:
It is perfectly normal for a baby to go a day or two without pooping once they are on solids. It is especially hard for a baby switching from breast milk (since it is a natural laxative). I have been dealing with the same issue. Here is what I have learned:

It should be the consistency of a thick peanut butter right now. As for the color, that depends on the color the food going in. My daughter does the same thing (straining, turning red, then nothing). It shouldn't be a problem unless she is obviously in discomfort. If you are concerned about constipation, monitor the foods she is eating. Think BRAT. That stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. These foods tend to 'bind'. If she is having trouble pooping, limit these. Incorporate apple juice, prune juice, prunes, and peaches. Also make sure you continue breastfeeding as often as she will take it. They help loosen things up. Don't worry about calling the doc unless she has gone more than 3 days or is very uncomfortable.

I hope this helps! It can be kinda hard figuring all of this out.
