A question for vegitarian moms.?

My husband and I have been vegetarian for 4 years. I do eat eggs and dairy. I have a healthy 3 month old who is breastfed. I went through my diet with my ob when I was pregnant, and now with the pediatrician to make sure I'm getting all the necessary nutrients for my baby. We are trying to decide if we should give him meat or keep him vegetarian when he starts on solids (after the baby cereal of course).

I would love to hear from those who have made this decision with their children. We are only going to base our decision on health issues and not on the killing of animals for the food.

Answer:
We are a vegan family. I have been vegan for 14 years. My children have been vegan all their lives. I have breastfed both my children. My DD (10 years old now) for 40 months, and my son is still nurses several time a day and night at 23 months. They are very healthy and hardly ever sick. Even when my DD does catch a cold, she is better in a day or two!

They have had their iron tested and test just fine. They both love green veggies, which supply all the iron their bodies need.

There is no need to EVER start him on meat, or baby cereal for that matter. Cereal has little nutritional value and is overly processed, dead food. Meat is not a natural food for an infant, as they have neither the teeth, nor the intestinal structure for its consumption (canines are some of the last teeth to erupt.) Additionally, humans NEVER need the milk of other animals either. Can you imagine breastfeeding from a cow?-)

My son started on foods like mashed peas and sweet potatoes and my daughter's first food was acorn squash on Thanksgiving!
As long as you are giving him baby cereal with iron in it he should be fine. If you are strictly a vegan diet though that can be harmful for babies. It is actually healthier for him to be on a vegetarian diet it reduces the risk of getting many diseases later on in life. Just make sure to keep up with his iron and protien intake and he will be a very healthy little boy.
I have a few friends who are either vegetarian or vegan. They give the same diet to their kids and the kids seem to be doing just fine. As long they are eating healthy, there's no need to worry.
