My son has a hernia in his belly button.should he get surgery or wait?

my 5 month old son has what you call a slight hernia in his belly button.it seems that everytime he cries,it getting bigger.the doctor said that it will go down completly when he turns around 7 years old.it doesnt hurt it but to me looks very strange.should i opt for surgery or let nature take its course??

Answer:
my son had the same thing (umbilical hernia) when he was first born and now he's almost 3 months old and it has dropped. the docs don't like to do surgery right away, they would rather have it drop. as far as crying thats just his little belly going up and down. he might be crying bc of some uncomfy gas.prenatally all babies have an opening in the abdominal wall through which blood vessels extend into the umbilical cord. in some cases the opening doesnt completely close at birth. when baies cry, cough or strain, a small coil of intestine bulges through the opening, raising the umbilicus and the area around it. the intestine almost never strangulates in the opening, and in most cases, the hernia usually resolves without intervention. small openings usually close around a few months, or become unnoticable and lrger ones by age 2. surgery i not reccomended unless the opening is very large, or is getting larger. they do say wait till 6 or 7 bc most will have closed by then.but, if you see signs of strangulation, the lump does not recede after crying, cant b pushed i, (not recommened to do so too much) becomes larger, is tender, or baby is vomiting, go the the ER, immediate surgery may be needed. just kee an eye on it, i'm sure he's fine, all babies are different, good luck and god bless.
No,please don't wait, it never gets better. I beg of you to relieve the suffering of your child now.
Good luck.
It depends upon what you mean by 'slight.' If you think it may bother your son as he ages, it would be best to opt for surgery early on. Recovery would be quite quick. If you don't think it would be a problem for him, there seems to be no harm in waiting some years. Of course keep an eye on it and let the pediatrician know if any changes occur. Goodluck.
Maybe you should ask the doctors opinion, not randomn people.
Hernias are not good things, my mother had one, she had an operation when it became the size of a basketball and nearly died. Some peoples hernias don't grow much at all. So the chioce is up to you- docs advice or your gut feeling as mummy.
I have a small hernia by my belly button, am leaving Vietnam Feb. 5Th for America for surgery. The doctors here are not good, but should it get worse I know how to take care of that until I see the Doctor.
I feel you should see another Doctor.
thats bad.realy BAD...my dad has a midium to sever hernia and hes going to have surgery.those things could kill someone...but...i think you should wait until your son grows a little older so he doesent get infected after the surgery since you said he has a little one so...untill then dont let your son pick up anything hevy because hernias are caused by imense preasure on a certin area of the body.

talk to your doctor.he will tell you more on what to do but he might say somthing different but its your dission.i hope your son gets out of this ok.i dont think anyone should die at that age.
good luck with this

peace out
Your doctor is right . Most times umbilical hernias will heal on their own in children. That type of hernia is pretty much harmless and painless. Surgery is such a risk, especially for babies. Why take that risk if the hernia may heal on it's own? Let nature take it's course. Wait and see what happens. If it's not healed by the time your child is 7, then consider surgery.
I think what you can do since your doctor says its fine is if your concerned about it you can either go to your doctor and see what hes says about fixing it through surgery or you can also on top of that to help settle your nerves so you feel better about all thats happening is get a second opinion plus research on hernias so you have an idea where the doctors are coming from if they are telling you hes fine so you just dont freak out that they just dont wanna do anything about it.. Another option is take him to a doctor at the hospital to check it out for a lot of clinic doctors I find just like to get you outta there office as fast as possible..

So I hope all goes well and I hope that helped some..
I am in the same situation.I have a 7 month old daughter with a hernia in her belly button.I have seen three different doctors about it and they have all told me hers looks fine.My original doc.said to keep an eye on it.For changes and etc. If she still has it in a year, then he said he wants to consider removing it.Obviously, that would be my decision. So i am a little curious myself.Mine told me when she turns a year old, yours around seven?Hopefully everything works out for you!
