13 mo old with a fever?

My daughter is 13 months and has had a fever since earlier this evening. When I give her Tylenol it goes away, but reappears when it wears off (which is why i'm up again) It spikes at 102 before it goes down again. She has a slight cold but other than that, there are no other symptoms. Before we went to bed, I called the ER and asked if I should take her in or wait til morning, and the nurse said to just talk to the doc in the morning. But screaming at 3am seems a little excessive. Would you bring her in or wait?

Answer:
My 13 month old son just went through this, his temp was 102 (couldn't get it down) also. It's not considered high, but you want to give Infants Tylenol or Infant Motrin to make her more comfortable. I prefer Motrin, as a tolerance can build with Tylenol. However, the er doctor told me to alternate between them (motrin every six hours and tylenol every four, so slightly overlapping...it worked) You should ask before trying that though. Keep her cool, dressed lightly and a lukewarm bath if needed. If she's having a rough time bring her to the er, otherwise wait until morning. My son had a cold and an ear infection (no signs), so needed antibiotics. I hope she feels better soon. Good luck.

kids can get fevers and theres not much to worry about. could be teething. motrin is by far the best
Take her to the ER! NOW!

102 temps are not to be taken lightly. I have seen kids come in the ER dead from congestion and high temps! Don't wait for an MD. Those temps will dehydrate a kid so quick, and then their acid-base balance (pH) goes off and your heart stops! Not trying to scare you, but that nurse didn't know what she was talking about!
I have two daughters. If one of my daughters had a 102 fever which was not brought under control with Tylenol or Advil within 4 hours I would have her down the ER now. I would not worry about a fever of 101 or under, but as soon as I saw 102 or a sustained 101 which did not go down with the above mentioned remidies I woudl be talking to the nurse while driving my daughter to the ER telling her that I was taking her their. Is she teething? I would err on the side of caution rather than not. This is your daughter. DO what you feel is in her best interest. Their is no need to scream at anyone about it. Just do what is in her best interest and everything will be ok.
Yea, I would definitely take her to the ER. Even though fevers seem
to get more excessive when it gets later in the day(or so that's
what i have come to see) it is still a little high for such a young child
you should take her to the hospital..
A Fever usually makes them dehydrated, make sure she is nursing or drinking her formula rather than juices or water VERY IMPORTANT!, call her pediatrician's office (they usually have after hour nurses to answer your questions), give her Tylenol every 4 fours or whatever the nurse tells you, live her with her diaper only, my daughter's Doctor always tells me that if she refuses to drink or eat ,that is a big red flag because dehydration can affect them badly. With babies you never know, can be that her body is fitting the cold, or teething or ear infection or stomach. I hope your baby gets better, don't stop giving her something for the fever if you are waiting until the morning, but if the fever doesn't go down when you give it to her , you should take her in!
I'd wait to bring her in. Believe it or not, 102 is not a horrible temp for a child at 13 months. My son has had several temps this high and I've called a nurseline offered by our insurance, just to double check what the temp should be before I bring my son into the hospital. Each time I'm told 102 isn't bad and I just need to make sure it doesn't get to 104 or so.

If the temp starts to raise is where I'd start to be cautious.

Call your Dr today and see what he says. If he thinks its an ear infection he may just have you come to the clinic.
