Is their a "normal" amount of weight gain for a newborn?
Answer:
You should be thrilled! That's excellent...the last few weeks in utero is the time they normally pack on the extra baby fat...so he must just be putting it on like he normally would ...
My baby lost a bunch of weight right after he was born and my doctor was thrilled that he put on about a pound in 4 days...and he's been on the gain ever since.
Remember, baby's only eat til their full (especially breadfed babies)
It's adults that force babies to finish bottles and clean plates...That's when overeating becomes a learned habit.
As long as he's eating regularly and flourishing and the doctor is happy with his progress...don't worry daddy.
The doctor is what you need to go by. If he didn't say anything negative, it should be fine. He might have been surprised because he was early.
congrats on your little boy. my little girl gained 21oz in one week when she was 3 weeks old. The doctor was surprised too and did not say anything. She slowed down after that and is now gaining weight steadily. I think that it’s a period in their life when they eat allot and put it all into their weight. I don’t think that there is anything to worry about and does not mean that they are going to be overweight.
Congratulations! You should be proud your son has gained
weight and is catching up to the "normal" weight.
I have three son's who weighed nine pounds or more when
they were born. My middle son was a week early.
I have big babies. My opinion is that I don't think there is a "normal" amount of weight gain for a newborn.
That is great you know your baby is growing and getting what he needs. It is so amazing how fast they grow! My pediatrician told me that my son should be at least back up to his birth weight at 2 weeks old. And he gained 2 pounds at that point. So I was happy, enjoy every moment with your little guy. Congrats.
That's good that he is gaining weight. There is nothing wrong with him being 8 lbs. At least he is healthy. My daughter was 8lbs 5oz when she was born. There is no set weight for a baby to be, all baby's are different. Everything is ok stop stressing
The doctor's response should be a good indication to you that things are OK. My daughter was a preemie and it took her a good 3 months to put on that amount of weight. All babies are different, and it is worth remembering that the majority of weight gain in utero is during the last month, so a large gain in the last 3 weeks is great.
The doc probably seemed surprised because babies that come early are often slow to gain as eating can be tiring. Kudos to you and the baby's mom, you seem to be doing a good job.
BTW: while there is no "normal" rate of weight gain for a newborn, the average is 15-30g (or 0.5 - 1oz) per day, so your son is right on track - congrats on your new little guy.
