3 month old baby and the gf wants to heat his milk in a microwave...what is your opinion?
Answer:
SOMETHING happens that may not be good in a microwave. When water is sterilized in a conventional oven and then used to water a seed, the seed will germinate and grow. But, when water that has been sterilized in a microwave oven and is then used to water a seed, the seed will not germinate and grow. Just something for you to consider. Radiation sterilization, such as is done to kill e-coli and other bacteria in vegetables is safe, though. The radiation only shakes up and heats the molecules of microbes, like shining light through a cloth. There isn't anything radioactive in the food. Only the source of the radiation is radioactive and unsafe to touch or eat.
you are right. you should never heat formula in the microwave you should heat the water first and as for breast milk i would heat that in boilng water
maybe you ought to think about throwing away the mircowave, and buying organic food instead?
Personally I dont think babies milk should be heated in the microwave. For one who knows if what it does to the milk and secondly microwaved fluids can get hot spots and she could end up scalding babies mouth xxxx
I think it's perfectly okay. I did it when my children were babies.
I use the microwave... even though it says not to.
I think the reason for the warning is for fear of scalding the baby. Microwaves heat unevenly, and there is the possibility of injury.
If you make sure you shake the bottle well before givng it to the baby, and always test the tempurature on the inside of your wrist or elbow... it should be fine.
I've used the microwave for 9 months, and my baby is growing and healthy.
the only reason i have ever heard about not heating formula in the microwave is because it can cause hotspots that can burn the babies mouth. It is a possibility, but when I have to warm a bottle quickly i will do it in the microwave and shake the bottle thoroughly afterwards to disperse any hotspots that may have developed. my children have never been burned.
Nutrients and not eradicated by warming a bottle in the Microwave however you must be careful when warming a bottle in the microwave due to the fact that your microwave may have hot spots.
I fed my children on formula milk warmed(not boiled) in the microwave. They are perfectly healthy still aged 21 and 18
my doc said that formula does not need to be heated and so I didnt
Life was so easy
we went everywhere and didnt have to find as stove or microwave
No negative results happened and formula was ready when He was right now
First of all you should NEVER microwave a babies bottle, it creates uneven heating and cause heat pockets which could serious burn a babies mouth so dangerious (all baby books, and doctors say so), I always used a baby bottle warmer(i bought at walmart) but before that I used a glass of hot water..The bottle warmer evenly warms the milk, and if used correctly will shut off to prevent the milk from becoming to hot.good luck
You are right. You arent supposed to microwave the babys milk because of that very reason.
Why warm baby formula or milk?
Although room temperature formula or breast milk is fine for your baby, some babies prefer to have their formula or breast milk warmed. If that is your baby's preference, warm his / her bottle safely by following the instructions below.
Procedure for Warming Baby Formula / Breast Milk
1. Warm the bottle in warm -- not boiling -- water by one of these two methods:
Put the bottle into a bowl of warm water for a few minutes
Run warm tap water over the bottle for a few minutes
Don't let the water touch the lid of the bottle (to avoid contamination)
2. After warming the bottle, shake it well.
3. Test the temperature of the liquid by dropping a few drops of breast milk or formula onto your wrist. It should feel comfortably warm.
Precautions for Warming Baby Formula / Breast Milk
Do not use a microwave to warm formula or breast milk. You should never use a microwave to heat a baby's bottle because:
Microwaves cause "hot spots" when used to warm breast milk and formula. There is a very serious risk of burning your baby's mouth, throat and esophagus (the tube that goes to your baby's stomach). This can happen even if you shake the bottle after you warm it in a microwave.
Breast milk, if heated too much, can lose some of its benefits for your baby.
A bottle that has been warmed in a microwave can cause a burn from hot liquid or steam.
I don't know about the nutrients, but I know the majority of advice says you shouldn't heat in the microwave as it can cause heat spots in the milk (as with any food) and if it isn't then mixed and checked properly then you run the risk of scalding the baby.
A bottle warmer doesn't take that long, and by 3 months your little one should be getting into a routine so you should be able to predict when they will be needing a bottle so you can start preparing it before WW3 starts (we had about 24 seconds warning before the full screaming started!!) so if you aren't both in agreement then I would stick to the bottle warmer.
The alternative is to make them up fresh each time, with boiled water, and give them chance to cool to drinkable temperature.
I will see if I can find an 'official' opinion!
no don't use microwave all the nutrients are gone plus the reason when you cook food in the microwave and the package tells you to let it sit is bc all the little particles are moving all around for the first few mins all you need it to the let tap water run as hot as it gets over the bottle till its all heated and that is hot enough even if your lazy whats easier then putting it under running water
i dont see any difference. i done it both ways. but i think they warn you about the microwave because of getting it too hot and burning the baby. but i would ask dr if that concerned and see what they say.
nope dont do it, microwave not good. warm it in hot water. microwaves heat things unevenly and you might not think its hot as well.
it's okay to do that! breast milk is warm also..microwaving the milk if fine...i did both the bottle and breast feeding...it's fine...i microwave my baby's bottles all the time. doesn't do anything...take it from someon who has a baby...doesnt matter how young...the baby needs warm milk so it won't get any bad gas!
o yeah if you heat it no matter what way.make sure the milk isn't scorching...you should know how to check the milk.
People may think I'm wrong but I've always done it. Two kids, 6 and 12 now and they were both very healthy babies and are still healthy.
Check with your doctor and see what he/she thinks is best.
I think that is a good point about loss of nutrients. There are other negative factors: one of the most obvious is that microwave does not create even temperatures with dangerous hot spots even when you test it. It's so much more convenient to sit the bottle briefly in hot water or longer in warm water in a pan, jug or bowl; this is a very good way of heating milk for babies, safer all round I believe.
its not only unheathy but a danger to the baby.
is it worth going the easy way to put your baby in harms way.?
lose the gf
Really, if you place a capped bottle of breast or cow's milk in a big coffee mug and run hot water over it for a few minutes it will be nice and warm in no time. Also, it doesn't hurt a child to give them cold milk....my baby prefered it on the cool side. You can also mix formula with warm water and skip the heating step. Having a baby is a lot of work....don't fight over these things.
To defrost frozen breast milk:
Place milk in refrigerator the night before you're going to use it. Refrigerator defrosting takes 12 hours.
Place the frozen milk under warm running water or in a pan of warm water. Don't use hot water, as this can destroy some of the milk's immunological components.
Fat in breastmilk will separate and rise to the top. By gently swirling the container, you can mix any fat that may have separated.
Never refreeze thawed breastmilk.
Remember, the color, consistency and odor of you breast milk may vary depending upon your diet.
Discard any breastmilk you don't use during a feeding.
Caution: Never microwave breastmilk! Microwaving breastmilk can change the milk's composition, and has the potential to burn your baby.
You are!
I never heated my son's formula in the microwave. I would heat the water in the microwave then mix it in a seperate bowl (Tupperware fridgesmart containers were easy to pour in the bottle).
My sister does this with her daughter's formula and it irks me to no end. She just thinks I'm nuts and over reacting. But, that's typical.
I believe cans say right on them not to microwave. You can find lots of good info on google. Babycenter.com (or babycentre.com in the UK) is my favorite pregnancy go to for advice.
My opinion is get with the times.I am a mommy of a 2 yr old who by the way is in the 96th percentile for his age...meaning he is a young healthy big boy and all of his bottles were heated in the microwave..the only reason people choose not to heat their childs formula in the microwave is because it makes hot spots in the formula and if you dont shake and test it, it can burn the baby's mouth.
Ermm. I'd say that you were not correct since microwave heating is NOT about radiation in that sense - its about using a magnetic field to aggitate the molecules of the food/liquid which creates friction and in turn heat. The magnetic field does NOT radiate heat like a flame does or an electric element does - so ostensively you get more radiation from flame/heating element than you'd experience in a microwave oven. Even so I'd not recommend using a microwave for heating milk for a young child since heating by this method can create "hot spots" within the liquid itself that may cause a burn in some limited cases!
you're right the best way to warm a milk is to put the bottle in a hot water for few minutes.
If you heat it in a microwave you can be left with very hot spots and cold spots. In an emergency or where there is no other option then I guess it would be ok but not all the time. Please don't fall out compromise. Discuss it and meet in the middle. She is probably feeling the strain at the moment and feels it will be easier for her. Help her out more, talk to her reassure her. Good luck :)
In the microwave, the nutrients are lost, as you said. Also, a microwave heats the bottle unevenly - you could have parts of the formula/breastmilk that are way too hot for baby. You should set the bottle in some hot water or use a bottle warmer.
Goodness me! Your GF needs to read her baby books ASAP. They will all say DO NOT heat the bottle in the microwave due to hotspots but also because they are just not designed for this.
At the Nursery I work at, we either use a bottle warmer or a jug of hot water.
PS, formula and breast milk do not react like normal food does so nutrients are not lost in the heating process
God bless
maybe 3months is a bit young but if she feeds him/her more i would let her choose
it is not healthy.. you can get a bottle warmer or put it in water picture full of warm water... however... if she has a screaming baby that wants food NOW and is the one that has to heat god knows how many bottles a day.. then it is her say... I do it sometimes. To avoid hot spots make sure she shakes it good
They say your not meant to heat baby formula in the microwave because the formula is made for powder so when mixed with water it can create lumps in the milk, and these lump would be first to heat up in the microwave and would scold the babies mouth.
I have heated milk in the microwave, never for longer than 30 seconds and with a good shake for a minuted there is no problem in using the microwave for reheating formula
