How did you care for your baby's umbilical cord?

I've heard to swab it with alcohol at every diaper change, I've heard to leave it alone, just make sure it's clean, I've heard to just use a little cotton tipped swab with alcohol...anyone know what doctor's are recommending now?

Answer:
My doctor told me to clean it with alcohol at every diaper change or at least 4-5 times a day. Remember to lift the umby cord up and clean underneath it... you'll know if it needs to be done because it'll start to smell and be a little yellow if you don't do it. I used the johnson baby cotton swabs, the shape seemed to work better and that way you don't use too much alcohol.
the first one. swab with a q tip dipped in alcohol at every diaper change until it falls off.
Swab with alcohol at every change. It keeps it clean and dries it out so it falls off faster.

Congrats on the new little bundle of joy!!
Just what you just said, just be very gentle while cleaning it, It's kinda scary huh? I know i was a little nervous when I did it , I took a baby soft washcloth with just soap and water (while bathing her) and gently washed around it the best I could every day and sometimes at night depending on how messy she got. I was never to releaved when that thing finial came off. But all and all it wasn't that bad. Be careful not to use to much alcohol it might burn his/her skin. Hope I could help. sunnydays
I was given a box of the alcohol soaked squares in foil....the alcohol helps dry out the tissue so it will heal and fall off quicker.
I've had three children and every single one of them I was told to use alchol swabs gently during at least every other diaper change. It keeps it clean and dry (less risk of infection). They also tell you not to immerse the baby in water until after it falls off for the same reason. The cord stump will fall off when it's ready. Sometimes it's fast sometimes it's slow. My first child took three weeks, second child about 10 days, third child about five days. Each and every baby has it's own time table. Just follow doctors advice as best as you can.
Swab with alcohol every diaper change to every other diaper change...you're doing great...keep it up...and congrats on the baby!
I have three...
#1 it was alcohol swab
#2 was leave it alone
# 3 was alcohol swab
It didn't make a difference they all fell off the same amount of time.

So hows that for science?
i used a cotton ball with a little alcohol and it kept it clean it came off in no time
the old routine was swab it with a q tip dipped im alcohol.but doctors are saying tat they have done research that proves that using alcohol on the umbilical caord and using nothing will cause the stump to fall off at the same time.

so pretty much do whatever you like
clean it with an alcohol swab or q-tip with alcohol with every diaper change til it falls off.
