2 week old taking over an hour to feed every time...?

I have a problem in that my 2 week old takes too long to feed. He will fall asleep, stare and look disinterested, or have his eyes closed, suck a few times, then pause for over 5 minutes while still latched on. I have tried undressing him, cold wash cloth, etc. He still takes his time.

This is becoming an enormous problem because he doesn't drain the breast and I ended up with mastitis. In addition, my nipples can't take an 80-90 minute feed every time anymore.

My pediatrician suggested that I unlatch him the first time he falls asleep and he will eventually learn to take more at each feeding. We tried this, but no matter how long between feedings, he still had the same behavior.

Any suggestions??!!

Thank you!

You must be getting so tired!! When my babies did this i would gently nuck them under the chin and then they would usually start sucking again. You should express left over milk, and depending on how you feel about this offer the breast milk from a bottle?
IDid your dr check inside your babys mouth? If not get this seen to there may be a problem there. Also mabey let him get a bit over hungry then he will take more as his need will be greater. Keep a check on his weight to make sure he is growing at the right rate too! Good luck!
I think that is normal and one of the common difficulties in breastfeedin. You are only 2 weeks into this and both of you are still learning. It may take a few months before you really feel you have got the hang of this. I would suggest you pump some for two reasons- one to empty your breast and two to store some milk in the fridge and give your nipples some rest. Look into renting a Medela pump call the hospital you delivered at and they help you locate a dealer.
I like the first answerer suggestion, it is a good one.
I am from the old school, what we used to do, was tap the babies toes to wake him up, he would get upset and suck on the nipples. I sounds like I had my children in the dark ages, but believe me it does work. The baby would get frustrated because you don't let him sleep so he would drink the milk quicker to go back to sleep. Also remember he is still very young, it takes a while for the baby to know that if he sucks milk will come out. He will learn eventually. God bless you all.
