my Grandpa made a time capslue for me to be opened on my 21st. i'm only 20 so i duno exactly whats in it, but i kno theres a fair few coins made in the year i was born, what was number one, photo's of every1, letters from all the family. its going to be so upsetting opening the letters and reading them as my nan, grandpa, and one uncle are all dead now, but i think its a lovely idea and can't wait to hear what they thought of me as a baby!! i'm due in May and i'm going to do the time capsule thingy for my baby...just dnt burry it! they burried my big bro n sis's ones...then 4got where they were burried! whoops!

Why do you want to buy him something not silver? Silver and gold are traditional for Christening presents.
I guess I don't really understand the question. You want to buy him something that is NOT silver. but you want to buy him something that IS appropriate and modern. How about a toy chest/wooden trunk? A nice banker's lamp or artwork for his room. He would still have any of these things years from now. Just being his godmother is a great gift, too.

A U.S. Savings Bond and something else that you can engrave with this special date. Perhaps a charm or crystal piece of sorts. I was going to suggest a Swiss army knife, but don't know if he would have the occasion to use it. Definitely something to commemorate the day. The savings bonds make great additions to birthday and holiday gifts and something the child will appreciate once old enough to cash them in, hopefully for college. They can be purchased at local banks or through the Treasury Dept. on-line.
How about doing him a family tree? Useful for years to come.

why dont you open a post office account or buy them prize bonds?and every month put a certain amount of money into it i.e 5 pounds or euro or more if you can afford it.its a way of getting kids to save and appreciate money and thst mammy and daddy are not mobile banks!!!
You can order a coin proof set from the US MInt, that will have new, uncirculated coinage from his birthyear, they come in a sealed plastic case. Savings bonds are always appropriate.
