Unless baby has sensative skin just use what ever you use on your clothes. If it irratates baby, try a 2nd rinse.
Even Dreft is more irratating than homemade laundry detergent, esp if it's made with Ivory soap.

Everybody will say Dreft because that's the one that gets advertised as baby det. but I say "ALL free and clear" it has no perfumes or anything in it. It's what we use. Whatever you decide, use it on your shirts and any blankets, crib sheets, and towels the baby will be spending a lot of time touching.
use regular its fine the other stuff is just a waste of money and they all do the same thing. if you use sensetive stuff for a baby then they will grow to have sensitive skin and have bad reactions to everthing so get them use to regular stuff now.
dreft- and it smells sooooooooooo good!! double rinse.
For the first month or so - use Dreft or Cheer-Free...really any 'free' of dyes or colors should be fine...especially if no one else in the family is sensitive to different detergents.

It is dermatologist tested, fragrance free, made for sensitive skin, and less than half the cost of Dreft. My pediatrician said it was fine. That is all I ever used on my daughter's clothes.

Ivory snow is good just the same as dreft if. however they are both a little pricey in my book. I am a mother of 5.. I have used on all my children All free and clear. It has no dyes in it and is just as good as the more expensive brands... Good luck

Look. Detergents are all the same. What you need to avoid is perfumes or colors. So, All Free&Clear is a safe choice.
Please don't be foolish and "pour" your loot down the drain. I was stupid, and with my first baby I did what everyone *else* said to do. You DON'T need a special detergent. Trust me on this one.
I like how almost everybody said dreft which is fine if you dont mind spending like $10 but I used purex baby has same smell and everything yet was only $4 per bottle and the bottle was the same size as the dreft or use a detergent that has no dye perfume, no nothing and it will be the same. As well most pedi docs say use the detergent for like the first 6 months to make sure there are no allergies then the easy thing to do is start washing a few of babies items in with your clothes and watch for a reaction, you dont want to do a whole load of baby clothes in regular detergent only to find out she is allergic and have to wash them all over again.
Arm & Hammer "FREE" as well.. You can start using whatever you want when the baby is about 4 weeks old.
All that is important is that there isnt any perfumes in it.. thats what might irritate baby's skin (and that doesnt count for all baby's.. there is just a chance for some)
Dreft is very popular and smells really nice but its spendy. I found All Free and Clear to work very well as did a free and clear version from Costco

use what you were using before else you will have to do all this separate laundry and it really doesn't matter. if your baby has a sensitivity you will notice it immediately then switch. my son is fine so far with 'all' but we noticed a mild rash with snuggle fabric softener. i did use all baby at first but at one of the baby classes i took they said anything will do. good luck.
Dreft does smell great..but if you have a sensitive nose, you might want to try something else. It can get a little irritating. I hear Purex Baby is good.
I use oxy clean not only is it dye free and hypoallergenic, it gets all the stains out! We all know formula, spit up, and baby poop stains, oxy clean gets it out everytime!
Purex baby!! Its much cheaper than Dreft and works the same!
Anything free of dye and scent is fine for a baby's clothes. Save your money.
dreft is the one that you see all the time on tv commercials. but it is really expensive. try any detdergent that is dye and fragrance free. try ALL in the white bottle. and it all depends on your babys skin too. my baby is due in may and the first thing that im going to try is ALL. you can even wash your clothes in that too. at walmart the big 96 load is only like $12.

I'm going to say All free and clear. Same concept as Dreft, but alot cheaper.
