Drinking beer while breastfeeding.?
Serious answers only please. I'm very educated and aware of the dangers of drinking while pregnant or breastfeeding. Thanks.
Answer:
Yes yeast can cause an increase in milk supply, however alcohol causes babies to drink less! There are of course other sources of yeast.

Effects of alcohol on breastfeeding and the breastfed baby
Alcohol does not increase milk production. In fact, babies nurse more frequently but take in less milk in the 3-4 hours after mom has had a drink, and one study showed a 23% decrease in milk volume with one drink (Mennella & Beauchamp 1991, 1993; Mennella 1997, 1999).
2+ drinks may inhibit let-down (Coiro et al 1992; Cobo 1974).
One study showed changes in the infant's sleep-wake patterning after short-term exposure to small amounts of alcohol in breastmilk -- infants whose mothers were light drinkers slept less (Mennella & Gerrish 1998).
Daily consumption of alcohol has been shown in the research to increase the risk for slow weight gain in the infant.
Daily consumption of alcohol (1+ drinks daily) has been associated with a decrease in gross motor development (Little et al 1989). "

The only thing I have ever heard is that if you drink then to wait 12 hours b4 u breastfeed again
It's not all beers, I believe there is something in Guinness beer that is good for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
It can help with your let doen not really your production although some women swear by it, so if you have a slow let down it could possibly help but don't drink more than one b/c then it will affect your milk and if your going to try it I would have one right after you feed your baby so the least amount of alcohol is in the ilk for the next feeding.
thats realli bad!
I was also told this by a nurse but with a different reason as to why. I was told the alcohol helps you relax and eases letdown. Supposedly only 1 beer isn't enough to pass and cause any problem for baby but I have been too wary to do it yet personally. Good luck. I hope someone can provide some reference material for you on this one. I would be curious to read it myself.
Yes, I have heard of this. ONE beer will not harm a baby. General rule of thumb is this : if you can feel a slight buzz, then there is enough alcohol in your milk to effect baby, if you have a beer or 2 and feel nothing, there isn't enough in there to harm...
BUT, there are other ways to help milk production! A daily bowl of Oatmeal, Fenugreek pills, protein, LOTS of fluids, rest, LOTS of nursing or pumping. Generally a womans body produces just the right amount of milk for her baby, and it increases/decreases as baby needs it!
First off..for those who will surely jump all over you about drinking and nursing..
The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a “Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.” As long as you drink responsibly, it is FINE to have a couple of drinks while nursing. It is simply recommended that nursing moms avoid breastfeeding during and for 2-3 hours after drinking (Hale 2002).
Now..
DARK beer was commonly recommended in the past as a way to increase supply. However, current studies indicate that alcoholic beverages do not increase milk production and, in fact, can lead to baby getting less milk.
The Subcommittee on Nutrition During Lactation (1991) found "there is no scientific evidence that consumption of alcoholic beverages has a beneficial impact on any aspect of lactation performance."
There are many other more effective ways to increase supply. The number one way is to make sure baby is latched on correctly and nursing often. Fenugreek is an herbal remedy that is commonly recommended for increasing supply. Most moms have good results from this. Other moms report that eating oatmeal daily helps them.
I have 5 kids and nursed all of them. I was always told to wait to nurse if I was to drink any alcohol beverage. They said to pump it out prior to drinking. Whatever you eat or drink goes to the breast milk that is why it is important to take care of yourself during this time. Congrats on the baby!
I suppose alcohol could help you relax, but it does not stimulate milk production. This is a total myth. Kellymom.com website has some good tips on this subject. I would avoid using alcohol as a way to get your milk to let down; just try and relax, get comfortable, adn the milk will come down with baby stimulating your nipple.
Honestly i have never heard of drinking beer or any other alcohol being good in any way during pregnancy so i dont know about that for sure
beer can cause you to get yeast inf. the baby can yeast every thing you can eat through your breast.you do get yeast inf through you breast also and you boobs hurt so bad you can not breast feed so don't recommend.
one beer would not hurt. as long as there is no buzz. personally i would also wait 8-12 hours before breastfeeding to make sure everything is okay.
There is less ETOH in your breastmilk than there is in a near beer. Usually after a couple of drinks your BAL is less than 1%. .08% is enough to get you for drunk driving. Most beers have over 3% ETOH in them. So as long as you are just limiting yourself to one or two drinks a eve. it won't really matter. I would usually have a drink right after my baby nursed so it would all be metabolized out of the body by the next feeding. Or I would have a drink at the same time. It relaxes the body and helps let down. I read that a dark stout will increase milk production.
that is BAD advice! The baby's increasing appetite is what causes more milk production, if the baby doesn't really want to nurse, try eating foods with a lot of garlic (for some reason, babies like it) and drink LOTS of water. Yeast can cause blockages in the milk ducts, the baby will suck them out, but it can be quite painful
Ok, it sounds bad, but it is very very true. It happened to me. I breast feed for months and one night I had two beers at a party. I figured I'd go home and pump the beer out. Well, my breasts were so full I had to leave the party, they were leaking all over the place.
People, get over yourself, she's not doing it. She should know the truth, Yes, it does. Try it and pump later just to see.
In addition, Fenugreek, has not done a thing for me or anyone else that had been told to try it. It just makes you urine smell like maple syrup.
I would not recommend that, the baby is going to get everything that you put into your body. would you pop a top and give it to your baby? I would recommend you talk to a pediatric doctor about this.
There are so many ways to increase milk production (drinking LOTS of water being your most effective and immediate remedy), that Im not sure Id try the beer thing (unless I just really wanted a beer, which is fine too.if you feel funny about it, you can always pump the babies next feeding and enjoy an ice cold beer). I did drink an occasional glass of wine while I was nursing, and if I had more than 1/2 a glass, I offered previously expressed milk at the next feeding.
Try water to increase milk production.the more hydrated you are, the more milk you will produce.
HATS OFF TO YOU for breast feeding!
I have never heard of that. I was told that if you are going to drink while breastfeeding, then to throw out that milk. Pump the milk yourself then just throw it down the drain. You should be good once 12 hours has past since your last beer.
It can help with the let down of your milk but only one a day, k.
I never drank while nursing both my children I didn't feel it was nesasary. My doctor told me that there is no known fact of how much alcohol actualy causes fetal alcohol syndrom so why chance it and i never did even after my babies where born and nursing.
Best of luck!
didnt know that. well u learn somethin new everyday
