What is the law on spanking a child?

What is the state law on spanking a child? Does it vary from state to state? If so I live in Oklahoma do you know what it is here and how do you know?

Answer:
OKLAHOMA

Parents/teachers/other persons can use ordinary force as a means of discipline, including but not limited to spanking, switching, or paddling. 21 Sec. 844.[Cr.] Criminal penalty for using unreasonable force upon a child under 18. 10

(unreasonable force is usually defined as breaking bones, leaving lasting marks, like black eyes, or drawing blood)

to bonnie m:
the same applies in Illinois, you can NOT be arrested for hitting your child (even if they call on you) unless you use excessive force.
It likely varies from state to state.
why there is other ways to disipline
I hope their aren't any laws for spanking.

that will ruin our society, but who knows, they will probably put you in prison for spanking now days.

they would rather that your kid become a criminal later in life, than to spank him now and have him become a good person
It's totally legal, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Oklahoma is a good salt of the earth state, so I suspect CPS and the libs aren't too powerful there and the cops would have your back.

So many of today's kids just sorely need a good, sound spanking. Don't beat the kids, just spank them.
as far as i know if you hit your child you can get in trouble, my son called on me, and if they really wanted to they told me i can be arrested for it. and i live in illinois. if you want contact the police station and just asked them what the law is, you don't have to say its for you , just say that you were wondering what the law is about spanking a child. and you don't have to give out your name.
spanking and abusing are two very volitale subjects. be careful how you use spanking with your children. sometimes you need to take a step back - breathe- then choose a different punishment. dont ever do it in the heat of the moment.
Never hit a child except in anger?
OK do not live there but you can do something else like punish him/her with no games/computer/stay in there room or all of the above but to answer your original ? i am pretty sure it is the same everywhere and i think it is ok to spank as long as you do not slap punch hit(other then butt)etc.!!
Your children deserve to receive the same amount of respect you desire to receive from them.

I think it's wrong to teach children that it's OK for big people to hit little people.

In addition to that, I know (from personal experience) "spankings" do not stop kids from doing things that adults think they shouldn't do.
I live in IL and I spank. Sometimes that is all that there is left to do. Although some kids this doesn't work on. Depends on the kid. Reading what people have already written and from own personal experience...I try to spank in private. I do a little tap on the hand when they are very small but as for getting in trouble I spank in private. I hope that this helps you.
I live in Tennessee. As far as I know, spanking children is legal unless you leave a bruise or something. Now, in a school, that is a completely different story. They used to have your parents sign a form to give you permission. Now it isn't allowed at all. And students are more disrespectful towards their teachers nowadays, then they ever were.
I don't know about Oklahoma. But I refuse to let a law stop me from parenting my child. There were times when I told my parent that I would call the police and they just handed me the phone. My cousin actually called the police when he was younger, because his dad threatened to spank him. And the police told his dad to go ahead and do it.
So many children are out of control nowadays. Some kids actually DO need it.
it does vary from state to state as every law does. im not totally sure on the Oklahoma laws but I was a Military Police and our rule was that you cannot use any kind of object to spank them and you can not leave any marks or it is considered child abuse.
