What causes kids to argue?

Really, there isn't an answer to this. That is just the way kids are. If the two are constantly together they might be getting on eachothers nerves, or if they arn't together enough then they are trying to establish who the 'boss' is.
There is always the possibility that their two personalities just don't mesh.
Just remember, they are kids, and they are immature, and fighting is one of our basic instincts.
whether they know it or not they are too much alike and one always wants to be right.
why are you trying to control them. as long as they aren't hurting each other send them into a room by them selves.
if it does get physical we use the idea of slave time. the offending kid has to do whatever the offended kid says for a period of time (5 min)
you know I had the same problem this weekend with my kids (especially arguing with me). Now i know that I am divorced from there mom and only see them every few weekends (actually I've spent the last few Mondays with both of them- an 11 yo girl and a 7 yo boy). I love them very much- they say because I'm not a 'full-time" father- they can argue with me-- my son even argued about trying on new shoes and dress suit for an upcoming bar Mitzvah with his cousins- so I'm not unique. Now to make matters worse I'm a pediatricina and they still argue with me and he is a Cub scout-he argued in front of me in front of his scout master.
the only thing i can guess is that boundries are being broken and children want to be treated as equals instead of listening to parents-- now I believe in Democracy but I know how to put on shoes better than he can-- i know how to do homework assignments better than he can (forget my 11 yo- I'll never win)
just because they can beat me at Rat-a Tat-Cat (a card game) and Pokeman-- doesn't mean that they understand all the basics of life (my son's great quote tonight-- "so I learned that dress shoes fit better with dress socks than with regular socks-- I never knew that before...")
