It really depends on the local laws where you give birth and whether you are married. Everyone else who responded said "no", but when I gave birth to my son in 2001 in Illinois, I was not able to put my son's father's name on the birth certificate until he filled out a form admitting that he was my son's father. The nurses actually wouldn't let me complete the form -- my ex had to sign the form, and then he had to write his name on the birth certificate paperwork. We were not married, so the red-tape bureaucracy was required.
