I don't know why people have such an issue with spanking! I think there are times when it is appropriate and times when it isn't. I also think that it depends on your child's personality. More strong-willed children who willfully challenge and defy their parents may need to be spanked and more compliant children may not need to be spanked at all because they don't challenge you much. The challenge for you, as a parent, is finding the right balance of discipline so you break his strong will but don't break his spirit.
If your son is laughing at you, yes even at 19months, it means that he doesn't think that you're tough enough to discipline him. He's daring you to do something about it, knowing full well that there will be no significant consequences. I've got a 19 month old with the same "spirit" and I have spanked him for egregious behavior(hitting me etc.) and use time outs for the most part. It has been much more calm since I got more assertive with loving discipline. Good luck!
when i don't think hitting your child is ever a good answer even if it just a light open handed spanking. you should try to use a deeper voice and keep a straight face when putting your child in timeout. be serious about it and tell him why he is in there and why you don't want him to act that way. he is only 19 months so he may just not understant time out yet.
Spanking only works if you want to teach your son it is ok to hit. I'm guessing you fuss at your son a lot, it's a game for him. Pick your battles, be firm, and consistent. Good luck, you're in for a ride!
Personally, I believe in spanking. My son is well behaved and he knows that when I get a certain look on my face or tone in my voice that I mean business. I never spank my son in anger and he gets lots of love, praise and encouragement when he is good. This seems to work well for me, but every child is different. They can't really feel it when they have on diapers anyway. Try being stern when he is bad and use positive renforcement when he is good.
Apparently your child fears his father more than you. If this bothers you, you could be more assertive, or you could just make his father the official reprimander. As for light spankings, they are needed at times. Children who're raised in homes without discipline, often have no respect for authority when they grow older.
i have an 8 mth old who does the same thing. as a child care worker i seen it all the time and we were not to smack at all! but my personal choice is that if they dont respond to your punishment at this level then you need to step it up a notch... i would try a light smackand see gow that feels, or when in time out make the child sit untill he/ she is ready to apologise without being cheeky. if the bed room has fun things in it take them out of there so if thats where the time out is going to take place then it is a punishment and not a reward. if all this fails then im out of ideas but i hope it works or im gonna be in the same boat as you!!!
