How do I keep my baby sitter from turning up my heat?
Two things to keep in mind:
1) Our heat is free...but we keep waking up drenched
2) She's from South Africa and this often happened last year but not to this extent...
Thanks!

Would you mind if she turned up the heat while she was there but made sure to return it back to the original setting before you arrived home? This way she won't be uncomfortable while she is sitting and you won't wake up drenched in sweat. If this is not an option than just explain to her why you don't want her to turn up the heat and that if she needs to bring an extra sweater she should do so. You could also leave out some extra blankets on a couch or a chair.
Be honest with her. Tell her the house feels uncomfortable when she does that and to please turn the temp. back to what it was in time for your return.
If she won't, there are special lock boxes you can buy at home improvement stores to guard your thermostat against people tampering with it. Businesses use them alot.
discuss it with her.. then if need be.. buy a box with lock to cover the thermostat with ( should be able to go to home depot for this)
How about you just check the thermostat before going to bed?
Are your kids complaining its too hot? If not..is it really that big of a deal. Depending on your thermostat...there are ways to "lock" it to a certain temp. If you cant remember to check the thermostat...ask her to turn it back to where it was before she leaves. Lots of different ways to handle this.
You don't pay for heat or the babysitter...and you're actually complaining?
If I were you Iwould just explain to her that its ok to use the heat but u would appreciate it if she would turnit back befor she leaves because it is to hot for you guys .
If your heat is free consider telling her you notice she must be cold, & you will turn your heat up a bit, but she also should bring a sweater. Then when you get home turn the thermostat down.
If I was getting a free sitter AND free heat, I quit the belly aching and just turn the thermostat back to where you want it when she leaves. A good sitter is hard to find and free heat is almost non-existent.
Well her personal body temperature is too low, you can raise her own temperature with having a fast 3sum with you, her, and your husband before you go out, that way she will already be sweating
Be lucky you have a baby sitter that you do not have to pay, and keep your mouth shut! Better yet why don't you check the thermostat before you go to bed the next time !
You should check the thermostat when you return home. Its as easy as that.
If you can afford to go out can you not afford to pay the babysitter a small amount.
It seems you want it all ways.
just put tape over the knob, and buy her a sweater
Um, 'heat' is not free unless it comes from the sun. Even though you may not personally be out of pocket for the expense of your electricity bill, unless you have solar panels on the roof, that energy is costing all of us something.
There are Wars being waged over that same 'energy'. Someone, somewhere is destroying the environment in one way or another to produce that energy and provide it to your home. Even if it is on your landlord's bill, the more we all use, the less there will be for future generations and the more Wars that will have to be waged to fight for the finite supply (either between countries or on the environment).
Just something to keep in mind.
Practically, put a sign next to your thermostat and ask that the temperature nor be set above or below a certain reasonable point. Then, check the thermostat when you get home from your night out to be sure it is at your desired range.
Why can't you check your heat before you go to bed to see what it is set on?
It's possible that she doesn't know that she is causing you discomfort. Tell her.
If the heat is free and you know she gets cold, just turn the heat down when you return. If the heating bill was getting too high than that would be a different story, I think you should just turn it down or tell her not to turn it up too high because you all couldn't understand why it had gotten so hot.
