This is the result of some of the elder persons' attempts to inject the distinction between a step mother and a natural mother into the kids' mind. Correct the children. Every grand parent deserves respect and should be introduced to the children in their first encounters.Wrong language will put the affected elders in a tricky situation in dealing with the child. But the blame for the mess will squarely be on the mother who is the custodian of moral standards for the infants. By the way Nanna is not indicative of step mother status.
Do correct the kids.
I call my mom's mother Mama and my dad's mother Abuelita... and all my nieces call my mom Mami.
I call my fathers mom..mom..and I call my moms mom..abuela(grandma in Spanish). I call my moms father..abuelo (grandpa in Spanish). My dads father died when he was young..but I would have called him pops. My grandma on my dad side was w/ this guy for 20 some odd years and I called him papa (he's dead now).R.I.P both of you..
my son calls one grandma"me farm" cause she lives on a farm and the other one "me mi" cause she`s from Romania. it`s cute. but he pronounces grandpa very good, and he passed away when my son was 10 months!
Our son chose names for all of his grandparents himself. He calls my mom Meemaw. He calls my husbands mom Mama. He calls my husbands dad Papa & he calls his great grandmother Grandma-ma. They just seemed so appropriate that we kept them.
I think you should let the grandparents decide what they want to be called.
