How do you chose from doing the considerate thing than what you want?

My father has never really taken a notice to me. He doesn't call me for months on end, sees me once, twice a year and he thinks it's normal. I don't like the man but everytime he beckons I come. Well this year he can't come in to where I and his whole family lives and so his parents (my grandparents) are driving up to him on the 26th and leaving the 28th and they want me to go. I have a dentist appointment on the 27th and I really don't want to go because he never drops things for me and I don't want to be stuck in a car for 7 hours up and 7 hours back for that short trip.

I don't know what to do. Be the good daughter and go anyway or not go and cause waves but do what I want?

Be honest, you have a prior engagement and you can't make it. You'll have to see him later on.
You have to do what is right for you. But being the better person is always a good thing to do
Tell them you have the dental appointment and you need to make it because it will be weeks before you can get in again, and you really need to go now because you have this killer toothache. Make sure you send him a card with a current photo in it. As long as you are polite and civil, no one can complain.
i hate that my real father is the same way, except he likes the damn bars whenever i went to stay there i didnt even see him because he was at the bars the whole time, now im 21 years old and i have 21 month old son and i dont go over there anymore except maybe once a year, he will call me and say why dont you come and see me and i say i never get to town and i will come one of these days but i never go, so i say do what you think is best i wouldnt drop my plans to go somewhere when that someone never drops hes plans for me but thats my opinion good luck in what ever you decide to do
sounds like me and my dad..i havent talked to him or seen him since xmas last year..and im still thinking about if i want to see him this xmas..i would just feel bad if anything happen to him though..it sucks i know
