Why do parents let their babies/children go to sleep with a bottle of milk?

Don't they know it causes tooth decay and can cause ear infections as well? Is it lazy parents who don't have the time to teach the children to put themselves to sleep without sucking something?

Answer:
I think it's an easy way out- but horrible! I know a guy I work with said he did this, and I told him about the tooth decay and ear infections, and he didn't care, that's the only way he seemed to get his son to sleep... just terrible. Our doctors told us all the time never to put the baby to bed with a bottle- to make sure the baby is held and propped up at all times when drinking bottle- said not to prop the bottle up with a pillow or anything as well- make sure YOU hold the bottle is what they said. To be honest, I don't think the guy I work with even took his son to see a doctor until he was a year old. TERRIBLE parenting!

Doctors also say to start brushing their teeth once they come in- even before if you want! And yes, they say this because they can get tooth decay.
ignorance, stupidity, laziness all get my vote for top reasons.
they want the easy way out of the room.
everyone does their best. Why cristisize and name call (lazy, etc). My friend lets the kid sleep and then goes in and takes the bottle as soon as they are asleep because the kid screams and screams if he doesn't get a comforting warm drink with his nap
The problem is that babies often cry at night time when they are HUNGARY! So to fix that problem, many parents just let them have a bottle of milk to keep them quiet.

I think you are wrong about tooth decay and ear infections!! Milk help to build stronger bones and vitamins for babies! Please remember it.
In the main it is ignorance
Because they are real parents who know how to raise kids and you herd or read a book and do not know nothting about raising kids.
Babies tooth decay?
You must be a genius to comment that.
Or too lazy to check before you ask.
i agree with most the others! the parents are lazy!
My children went to bed with their bottles...NO TOOTH DECAY NOR EAR INFECTIONS.Trust me you'll give in once your baby hasnt let you sleep in over two weeks. And for those of you who call us lazy...cant wait till you have kids.and you'll have to swallow your words. LAZY...LAZY your ... will leave it at that.
How many children do you have?

Parents, after working all day knowing they have to work again in the morning have to have sleep. Often they give in if it will quiet the baby and put him to sleep. Most of the time it is not laziness but fatigue!

Give parents a break. And actually tooth decay is an an infectious disease caused by a Strep bacteria. Children would actually have fewer cavities if people did not make kids eat or drink after them. You know buy the kids its own can of pop, and sandwich, don't make it share yours! And don't allow or force your child to eat or drink after other children either. Not even siblings!

If the baby never eats or drinks after anyone he may not get tooth decay at all!

and my sons had babas BUT we NEVER let him eat or ddrink after anyone as a baby. NO ear infectoin NO cavities. I lost all my teeth as 26 he is 27 and has had no cavities
I have no idea why parents do that, other then they cave in and give it to them. I never let my children go to bed with milk... Not only is it bad for their teeth and ears, but it also makes them more likely to wet the bed!!
Babies are suppose to go to sleep with a bottle and they wake up during the night for a bottle.

My son got a bottle before he went to bed for his first year and he woke up in the middle of the night for one and I never had a problem.

My mother is a GYN and she reccomends you not use bottles to put a child to sleep once they are a year old.
Ignorance, they try to tell them not to do this when they are in the hospital after they have the baby
You are right. It is called LAZINESS. It is also neglect because a baby could strangle.
Growing up, that is how I learned how to put children to sleep. My aunts did it with my cousins etc. It is something I believe a lot of people grow up with knowing in this generation and the ones before.

Now that medical technology is advancing, it is now starting to warn parents that leaving bottles of milk, juices and other substances, especially high in sugars will advance tooth decay.

To help decrease the risk, parents should: regularly brush their toddlers and older infants teeth very lightly with made devices specificaly for them, limit the amount of digestation to the mouth during time when not permitted to be needed (sleeping).

If have to put a child to sleep with bottle, limit the time being used. Example: allow the child to get enough in a deep sleep to not be awaken when bottle is taken out of their mouth. Not allow future suckling. Especially if there is only air or laying down, which can cause risk of choking or liquid entering the lungs.

When I place infants and toddlers to bed, I now to that above as they are not my children and they won't learn how to sleep on their own in one night. However, with my own children I will be breastfeeding, so won't be much of an issue. In the times I will be using a bottle in situations, I will pratice other sleeping ways with out sippys and bottles to get them to go to sleep.

Same with with sucking their thums can cause teeth and gum problems,. The bottle is known to do the same thing.
it soothes the baby
My baby goes to bed with a bottle of water. Plus I do not let him have any juice. I did the same with my older daughter and she has perfect teeth!
For God's sake. Why do other parents feel it is their duty to comment on everyone elses children? Let me guess, you will be one of those mothers that potty train their kids at gun point. And you are probably one of those mothers who have something to say to and about every other mother you see.

Look, I have a 2 year old who gets a bottle of milk at nap time and at bedtime. I brush his teeth twice a day, and he is as healthy as a horse. He's never even had a cold. His teeth are beautiful and straight as well.

It isn't laziness or ignorance. It is a comfort factor. My son has no problems putting himself to sleep, in fact he sleeps 13 hours a night because he is a healthy, active child.

Oh and hey - I use a toddler harness as well, I also feed him peanuts and the occasional cookie. Chew on that for a bit, I'm sure it will really piss you off.
Why do you care? Does it make you feel better to tell everyone else what they are doing wrong? Don't say you're trying to help because there was much nicer ways to state what you just said.
