What is the danger of back massages when pregnant?

i've heard that pregnant women are not supposed to get back massages, which is really inconvenient since this is the time that my back hurts the most. i got one of those massage chairs for christmas this year, but i'm afraid to use it. anyone know why pregnant women aren't supposed to do this?

Answer:
Massage is completely safe during all stages of pregnancy, even the 1st trimester. And it's safe to have a "deep" massage during pregnancy too.
I'm a massage therapist certified in prenatal, labor and postpartum massage and I work on women throughout pregnancy, and during most high risk situations as well.

It is safe for you to sit in your massage chair for as long as you like, but once you get bigger you'll want to put a pillow or wedge under your right hip to avoid putting too much pressure on the inferior vena cava- the vein that returns blood to the heart.

You can also have your partner or mom or sister or neighbor use a tennis ball to massage your low back, as I'm sure the massage chair might not reach it very well.

If you want a professional massage, be sure you find a therapist that has additional training in prenatal massage so you know you are in good hands.

There are some "side effects" from spending too much time in a reclined position- namely a posterior baby=horrible back labor, so be sure to spend some time on an exercise ball or leaning forward positions. it's called Optimal Fetal Positioning and I'll give you some links to look up.

Good luck and I hope you feel better.
you can have a back massage after 3 months in to your pregnancy. if you are not having any problems. just check with your doc.
I think the only problem is laying on your stomach. Go to a clinic and have a massage in a massage chair, you can still have a full back massage and your tummy won't be affected.
i've never heard that. been seeing a massage therapise and a chiro since before pregnancy, go weekly. and also did through my last 3 pregnancies.
as far as laying on your belly, they can do it with out you laying on your belly but that baby is very well protected there and it won be hurt by you laying on your belly anytiem during pregnancy, as long as you are not uncomfortable
