1mm of extra skin on collar?
my 20 week ultrasound showed newborn had 1mm of extra skin underneath the neck. could it be the babe just fatter consequently it should be or the position it was surrounded by ? has this take place to anyone ? Doc said all other organs looked forceful and fine. why would the doc call me if its simply 1mm? im only 22 years ancient
Answers: Between 11-13.5 weeks of pregnancy, you can have a scan to trial calculate the risk of Downs. The is call the Nuchal fold scan. It is only at this time that this skin can be measured as at other times, as you say-so, it could well be obese.
Also with Down's babies, a feeler bone is often gone.
You have to remember that the Nuchal fold is with the sole purpose a risk assesment. The test is also set to be so sensitive that here is a high rate of false positives. ie ladies who are told that they hold a high risk of have a Downs baby and further test reveal that the baby is fine.
I am not sure what your Doctor is doing, but I regard you need to speak to him again, if solely to set your mind at ease.
These test show only probabilities, not secure results.
If you want to be sure, Down syndrome (and other illnesses caused by "bad" chromosomes") can be examined from the indication of the amniotic fluid or the placenta. Ask you doctor about this.
