Are prescription and over the counter prenatal vitamins the same?
Also does anyone know anything about "Expectra" DHA supplements?
Answer:
Usually, the only difference in over-the-counter and prescription is the amount of Folic Acid, which is extremely important in the baby's development. However, eating apples and other fruits and vegetables should give you all the folic acid you need, and the additional amount in the vitamins is just a precaution.
I dont know much about the Expectra brand, except that it is a "non-fish source of dha" which supposedly limits your already low chance of getting mercury poisoning, and that taking the vitamins while pregnant or nursing helps the baby make the adjustment to formula, if you choose to do that and plan to use Expectra brand formula.
Talk to your doctor about using prenatal vitamins that arent prescription-- i did, and he okayed it without second thought. Your doctor may have reservations due to results of blood tests he will do throughout your pregnancy, though, so be sure to check with him/her first.
no rx has more folic acid in them then over the counter
Prenatal vitamins must meet very specific standards so yes they are the same- you can even get Kosher (gelatin free) without a prescription now.
I have never heard of Expecta but found you the link it is by Enfamil: http://www.expectalipil.com/expectalipil...
Good Luck!
