Make sure he eats well and rests and the body will usually defeat a common cold virus in 7-10 days.
Go to another doctor. Green mucus is a sign of infection. Get a bottle of Ayr saline nose spray as well until you get to the doctor. Poor little kid.
Also, you can use Robitussin syrup to help remove the congestion. Get the one that says Robitussion PE. Basically, that will help but still, green mucus means infection, bottom line.
You might seek a second opinion... usually green mucus is a sign of infection and that is probably why daycare won't let him in. I'd call another doctor
Unless he has a bacterial infection (which the doc ruled out) there isn't much you can do. Like the others said you might need a second opinion.
I work in a daycare and PLEEAASSSEEE, our daycare allows green boogers, every child has it. Get a doctors note stating it's okay to be in a daycare with his condition and the daycare has to let the child back in. If not, find another daycare who likes to care for children in any condition!

Use a saline nasal spray (check that it is age-appropriate), only saline. Have him sleep with a hot vapourizer in his room with the Vick's vapourizer oil in the little trough.
If he has no fever, then you just have to let it run its course. If he has a fever, take him to the doctor again.
Naturally, day care wants him to be virus-free when he comes back. Keep him clean and don't touch him with any hands that haven't been washed or a Kleenex that has touched him before.
Be alert for ear infections.
LOL!! My son had green boogers too and the daycare won't let him there.Your doctor didn't tell you what to get? My pediatrician told me to get him some infant dimetapp or similar type stuff for congestion and to also use saline and the booger sucker bulb..good luck and I hope your son gets better. Unfortunately, he will get the other little ones sick if he goes to daycare..so try to understand their point.I know it's hard when you have to work.
If it is green and smelly it means an infection...when my daughter had them she had a "cold" the dr. said two weeks later we found out she had a severe ear infection and had to get tubes.
As long as he is not running a fever, diarrhea, or vomitting he should be allowed to go to school. I have seen my fair share of nasty runny noses and hacking coughs lately! But greenies in the nose is not enough to keep your son from school. Viruses cannot be passed from person to person, bacteria can. A viral infection is something that develops within our bodies when our immune system breaks down. So guess what, if he has no fever or any of the symptoms I mentioned above, he is not contagious. Same way croup, ear infections etc are not contagious. They are illnesses that develop over time within the body.
The doc is right about it being a viral infection, but he should give the child something to dry up the symptoms. OTC like robitussin, Dimetapp, Motrin Cold, etc. Amoxicilin is a popular and cheap prescription that many day cares can give to children, with your permission. He just needs to phone it in.
However if he is congested, let him cough and blow it out during the day and supress at night. This way he is getting the excess mucus out of his system during the day, MUCINEX for kids works great and comes in a grape flavor. And we use Motrin Cold, or NyQuil cold at night. Helps them get their sleep during sickness.

Johnson and Johnson vapor bath. Give him one nightly and use a humidifier in his room to keep the mucus loose and clean him frequently.
Also, I don't know how old your son is, but see about getting an over the counter cold remedy like Dimetapp for kids, it will dry up a lot those boogers for daycare. Doctor is right, the mucus helps the cold run it's course, so let your son booger it up at night.
Sorry no suggestions on how to get rid of the green boogers , while you are home though is look for a sitter who does take sick kids. some hospitals in bigger cities have what is know as sick daycare it will cost you some more money but it is better than loosing your job.
or see if a family member who is home during the day can help out just when the kid is sick.
My son had the same thing. I found that you can get a basic saline solution for children. You just put a few drops in his nostrils 3X a day. My pediatrician suggested it, because it dries out the mucous. I hope this helps!
green mucous is a sign of an infection, that probably needs antibiotics. that is why the daycare wont allow your son in. take him to another doctor. and in the future you should try giving him vitamins (Enfamil has some for infants, or just a childrens vitamin for an older child). my daughter used to get sick ALL the time, and since i started giving her vitamins she gets sick a lot less.
