I am not sure if I understood this completely, but they make things that go over door knobs to prevent it from opening. You can put on on the inside of the door. You can still get in but he can't get out. Make sure you use a baby monitor just in case though...that way if something is wrong you can hear him.
Added: I have also seen people use TWO gates. One on top of the other.
