'Playdate' vs. 'coming over to play': no one says the 2nd anymore??

It seems like almost everyone I know with toddlers or small children says "playdate" when 2 or more kids get together to play. I also see this term written a lot in magazines, websites, etc.

I was just wondering if anyone simply says "coming over to play" anymore? When I was a little kid (back in the ancient 1970s, LOL), my friends and I called it that, and so did our parents. To me, "playdate" sounds like something that's too scheduled, organized and "official". I know it probably isn't that way, but somehow it doesn't sound as carefree, fun and spontaneous as "coming over to play." :)

Does anyone still say it like this, or is everything a "playdate" nowadays?

Answer:
I think of a playdate as a time when parents have to organize to bring kids together. You would have to do that with toddlers. On the other hand, I think of "coming over to play" as something older kids do (with reduced parental involvement.)

I agree, I don't remember the playdate term from my youth either. But, I also don't remember the focus on getting the toddler and under set together either. I think it is a great thing, if nothing else, it gives the parents some socialization (hmmmm, maybe that is the point! :-)))
I totally agree. While I was nannying in NY 5 years ago was when I first heard it and I thoughnt that it was just a yuppie NY thing but now as a parent it is everywhere! I still dont see any differecnce though-anyway you look at it its just going to play with friends.
i agree with you, it does make it sound stuffy, i don't use that phrase myself, i still say come on over to play
I sort of think of a playdate involving at least one of each kid's parent/guardian figures and "coming over to play" meaning that just a kid comes over, but I'm sure that distinction is only in my head. "Playdate" does sound kind of yuppie-ish and rigid, but it's quicker to say. ; )
As a kid, I would've been embarrassed if my parents had said "playdate" when I had my friends over. I wouldn't worry about whether it's cool or not--just use the language you're comfortable with.
i still say that so and so is coming over to play and so does everybody i know i think its just another way of saying it
i say it. a play date to me is when you and a friend go out somewhere else other than the other persons home with the kids. a play date is planned ahead and usually consists of parks and lunch outings etc... well hope this helps i still say someone is coming over to play or even to hang out for awhile . lol well good luck and have a good time bye.
