Why wont my 2 1/2 year old go pee pee in the potty? he tells me he needs to go, but he just wont go!?

he will pee just a little bit in his underwear and we sit on the potty for a while but it like he is scard to go in the potty.

Answer:
as a mother of three they none of them was the same. at this pee pee stuff. but give him time he will do it when he get ready don't push it if you do it will make he not want to use the potty any more like a big boy. and make sure know one has scard him of the potty. it could be a few thing is he the only kid. is there a new baby. if he not peeing in his underwear and not in the potty i call the docter just to see what they say. lol
boys are difficult, My son just turned 3 in December and finally goes on the potty all the time. they just go when they wanna go. I have a nephew who is 3 and 1/2 and still is learning, boys take longer then girls, I don't believe its because they are afraid of the potty but they just don't have an interest in it.
I'll give you a simple answer; because it wasnt his idea. Sounds funny but it comes from toddlers of this age naturally having a healthy and overactive ego. If you simply sit him down on the potty and give him a book or toy and give him the option when he wants to go. He will. Just in his own good time. You will need to repeat this procedure after drinks, long play sessions and before bed.
don't force him. it will seem like a scary thing he "has" to do. instead, maybe you can do something distracting while he's sitting on the potty, like reading him a book. maybe he's under pressure to go so it's hard for him to.

but remember, don't force him or it may do the opposite of the intended effect.
He may be scared of falling in, being flushed, or losing a part of himself. Sounds corny, but remember children think differently at that age. Try a goofy suggestion. Take his favorite toy and ask him to teach the toy to go potty. It'll make him feel like a big boy with a big responsiblity. Also, boys are naturally competitive, so he just might make sure he learns how before his toy does, lol. It helps to learn something when you teach it to someone else, also. Good luck.
he could have a problem with you sitting in their with him.
but boys are slower learners than girls, and alot more stubborn
When you see signs of 'the PP dance,' run him to the potty. He will get it and when he does make him feel like he saved the world with celebration. Make him feel sooo proud and he will.
In my opinion it takes some kids a while to connect the need to go to the bathroom with actually knowing to go before it hits the pants!

If you take your child with you about 15 minutes after you drink something or eat. You use the toilet with your child in there with you and your child will get the message and want to use their potty.
The sounds could stimulate them to also want to go.

Some children take longer to catch on to using the toilet...and others do it with no lag...they just go. Also the more you fuss about it to your child it just makes them more anxious and you more stressed out...try to deal with it in a calm and loving way..You will look back later in the years to come and see it was not the end of the world just part of parenting and the child's development.

Generally speaking most parents want their child to achieve this feat as quickly as they can but history has shown it takes a while and nothing is going to make it happen until they are ready and each one is on a different track. So patience and understanding is most important...

Love um ...and feed um ..care for them the best you can and they will do just fine. We don't get "booklets at birth" how to deal with all these growing up problems we learn from day to day how to deal with it.

Best of luck,
Mama Jazzy Geri
