3 year old in my care got hurt..?

by my sister's dog. We have other pets and we have never had a problem. He is a spaz and was very excited because she was over to pick him up and take him home and he jumped up on the little girl and gave her a really good puncture type scratch on her cheek. I apoligized to the parents, the dog will NEVER be here again. I am nervous about seeing them now though. Any suggestions on where I should go from here?

Answer:
You apologized, which is a very good thing to do. Now that you did that though, and you're still nervous. Send them an apology card with a bit of flowers to help soften them up a little before going over to see her. Maybe bring a toy or two over for the little one.
You've done all the right things by apologizing and taking the dog out of the home where the child visits. I fthe parents were understanding and understood that you didn't do it on purpose nad that the dog is gone then you should let it go and move on. They probably already ahve too. Everything will be fine just go visit the little girl and see what her parents say. Good Luck!!!!
Maybe a phone call to the parents to check up on the child. It opens up communication and shows them that you are concerned for their child. Like the others have said you did the right thing by removing the dog and apologizing.
Find out what the laws in your area are regarding your responsibilty to the injured child...if you could be held legally responsible, be the bigger person and take responsibility for what happened, ie..offer to pay for any medical bills that may have occured as a result of the injury. If the family is not likely to take legal action, then offer to do something nice for the child...no matter what the injury was, that was a terrifying experience for that child. Something similar happened to my son when he was the same age...it took a long time for him to feel safe around other dogs, but he now has his own dog that he adores. Occasionally, though, he still jumps back from her, afraid that she will bite him, even though his bite happend almost 2yrs ago.
It was an accident. The dog didnt mean it and I'm sure the parents realize it was an accident. The same thing happend to my daughter at a neighbors house and I certainly dont blame the owners.
You apologized and that's all you can do.. kids are going to get hurt by animals many times in their life.. I got bit on the eye by my dog when I was about 4 and one time when I was about 8 I got scratched by my cat, and I still have the scars from that one.. I'm sure it's not the last time he is going to get hurt by an animal, whether it be someone else's or his own.. I wouldn't worry to much about it.. if they are upset about it after this then they are just being overprotective..It happened there isn't much else you can do but apologize and tell them the dog won't be over there again while he is there
Let them know that the dog will not be near their child agin...Keep contact with the parents and check on the child. I myself have been in this situation before. Only my child was with me and required 21 stitches. It could happen anywhere at any time. Be open with them...Go visit the child...Do it now before your nerves get the best of you!
I suggest checking up on the child every day (if severe cut) or every other day. Make sure the child is not afraid of dogs. Offer to take the child to a pet store to pet animals, no cost activity...and charget the parents no fee. It is just a kind gesture and shows you are geniunely sorry and care for the girl.
