I've never heard of that working, but you never know. Depending on how old the child is, I'd say go for it if they're over the age of 2.
The best thing to give them is prunes. That's what all doctors recommend and it always works. Prune juice or maybe even get a jar of prune baby food and mix it in with some applesauce or spread it on some toast.

Warning, bananas and potatos both cause constipation and are great if your baby's stool is loose but could be the cause.
I would use a capful of mineral oil in their bottle or sippy cup depending on the age.It's natural and doesn't taste.

I never used molassas, but I did use Karo syrup or sugar water.
This always helped my twins.

Never heard of using molasses...however, I swear by usind Karo Syrup in a bottle of water(or in bottle of milk/formula if you are worried about empty calories) All of my kids went through different stages of constipation, my boys moreso than my daughter. Everytime they had an issue or what seemed like small, hard "pebble-like poops"- I would give them a bottle mixed w/Karo Syrup, and sure enough, their bowels would start moving almost immediately.(usually within the hour at VERY MOST) Just try and make sure that you aren't having to do this on too frequent a basis-if it seems like your little one is constipated ALOT of the time...make sure you ask your pediatrician if maybe there is another type of diet you can try, to prevent this. It works, and you only need small doses - but if you can successfully persuade them to take it, count yourself lucky.
I don't know but I do know that a handful of any dried fruit - dried apricots, dates, or sultanas - every day prevents constipation entirely. And kids like eating all of those things.
