I think your doctor is hoping that by keeping the stool soft it will push the solid fecal mass out. Since that hasn't happened maybe your toddler has a fecal impaction. In that case I would go to the doctor and have him or her remove it. Sometimes they do it in the office, and I have seen it in the OR. Its crude but they remove the mass physical by hand or finger and that's it.

Suppositories will soften and ease the stool out from the beginning to the end. They work great.
I think you need a new Dr...have you tried Benefiber in his cereal ? Is he getting enough water and fiber in his diet ?
Yes, you have to use a suppository to empty the bowel of the hard stool. The laxative stimulates but does not remove what is already partially released. Poor baby! I hope he feels good as new very soon.
yes the suppositories would. i would start with glycerin ones, they sell infant and child ones at most pharmacies.
also i would consider some major diet changes. like first off cutting out all sugar, it can be very constipating. a cup of warm prune juicec a day, increase his fiber and if its a regular problem request a consult with a dietician
You people are freaking nasty.
The suppositories do work but they take forever, or so it seems. Try a glycerin one. Also have him drink plenty of water. If he is able to have him lay down on a towel so nothing will get messy and be with him. Try and make him as comfortable as possible while the suppository is doing its job. Try reading a book or watching a video or listening to music. He will get the feeling like he has to go potty but try and wait as long as possible so it will all come out. Best of luck.
I find stool softer does work eventually. I had bad luck with suppositories. My son kept on pushing them back out, but no poop with them.
Glycerin suppositories aren't exactly stool softeners - they're mild irritants which induce osmosis, therefore bulk out the stool with liquid whilst impelling the child to discharge it. A homemade soap suppository will do the same thing, but if it's Ivory soap it'll be more irritating/painful. CO2 suppositories simply induce peristalsis by forming carbon dioxide gas in the rectum. Dulcolax suppositories are the "h-bomb in the war against constipation", enough said.
