I have found the nuby soft silicone spout is a upright one to start with. It is more close to a nipple. They are about $1 at Walmart.

Then you can graduate to a regular harder spout when he have more experience.
With my second daughter we were successful next to a Heinz cup that has a straw.
Every child is different - just maintain experimenting with different sippies, and maintain offering it to him.
keep offering the cup to him continously during the sunshine... the best kind to start beside is the silicon tops because they're sippy cups but they're not going straight from a bottle to a hard topped sippy, it give them time to adjust to the flow being different fairly than everything being different right away
