What are some new ways to teach my 2 year old to count?
Answer:
I am a nanny for a 2 year old little girl, and we started to get her counting by doing things she liked. I would count as I snapped the buttons on her pants, and she slowly caught on. Then we would count the stairs together when going up and down the stairs. It didn't take her long to get to 11, and then she would start back at one, so slowly I would introduce 12, then 13, and on and on. She had a lot of trouble with colors, and I discovered that she could only remember colors if we were talking about the color of cars. So everyday I would ask her "What color is my car? And Mommy's, and Daddy's? That just happened to be what stuck in her brain as far as colors. Every child develops at their own rate, just keep at it, and stay positive. He will pick it up eventually, he just has to do it in his own time.
We used pennies to start and it helps them grab the concept of money at the same time.
There is a Lily the Frog counting toy that kids LOVE and teachs numbers. I personally think it is cute when little kids count like that, I watch a little boy who counts 1,2,3,6!! He gets so excited when he can count to 6! It is stinkin cute. As long as he isn't a freshman and counting 1,6,9 which you probably don't have to worry about. Also keep reading to him, it helps with their readiness skills.
when my son was that age we used to count steps..anytime we would go up and down steps no matter where we were and he is now 5 and can count to 250..it stuck and now i stil ldo that with my other two kids we just always count the steps.
There are TONS of manipulatives out there to reinforce counting. I have a niece who is going to be 3 in March, and they have been just repeating with picking up toys, legos, etc...She still says, 1, 2, 3,6,7,13..I don't know where she learned 13!!
Just give it time. Your son will eventually get it, with a little reassurance and help from you!
PS- a really good book to reinforce the 'visual' numbers is "Hello, It's Elmo" where the kids can actually 'call' Elmo...
There is a lot of good advice on how to help him learn to count. I counted steps to ease my impatience following my little one up the stairs and one day she started counting.
Just remember it's ok if he takes his time. You shouldn't be embarrassed. He's not 5 and counting 6,9,9. He's 2. Relax, one day it will click. You're doing a great job reading to him and reinforcing it all. Just don't push yourself or him too hard.
Count everything you do, with him. Count the steps (as stated) count the plates, silverware etc. There are lots of books his age group that involve counting. I do not recommend pennies as they are a choking hazard.
Cereal take some cheerios or any of his favoite cereals or snacks for example take 5 cheerios and count with him.
