15 month old- normal fluid intake? What's normal at night?
Answer:
First, I would suggest no juice at night time. The sugars are bad for their teeth, especially at night. My dentist actually mentioned the other day the number of toddlers he sees with "rotten" baby teeth. My Mom NEVER sent us to bed with a sippy cup of anything; that is why we all have our adult teeth and they are fine.
First, a sippy cup overnight sets up a bad precedence for when you are trying to potty train - can't expect a child to make it through the night if they've had 12 oz. or more of juice at 10 pm. Secondly, access to the sippy cup and sugary fruit juices, even diluted, means those little teeth are getting coated with all that sugar and saliva and he will end up with cavities before his adult teeth are in.
Having said that, I can tell you that my son will have a sippy cup of whole milk with breakfast, lunch and dinner (and it's approximately 12oz). In between meals he will get a sippy cup of organic juice (where the ingredients on the label do NOT include things like "high fructose corn syrup" or "dextrose" or "sugar") If any of the first five ingredients on the juice are those that I named above, don't buy it; that's the rule of thumb that we all should live by (I watch too much Dr. Oz and healthy living on Discovery channel!!)
When he gets settled down at night (read my response to your post about sleep schedules) he will get a "taste" of whole milk - nothing sugary (as it defeats the purpose of having brushed his teeth fifteen minutes earlier).
At 15 months old, your grandson shouldn't be waking up at night asking for something to drink. It's the routine that has been established and one you will need to break now or you will make yourself crazy (and EXHAUSTED!). Little kids are like puppies - they THINK they need something to drink but they don't really. Usually, it's just boredom.
So, at the risk of making your grandson extra cranky, don't give in and get up if he wakes in the middle of the night. He needs to learn how to put himself back to sleep. Every time you get up and give him something to drink, you are reinforcing that routine. It will mean that for a few days, he will cry and rant in his crib in the middle of the night, but eventually, he WILL go back to sleep. And also, don't let him sleep late the next morning. Wake him up at 8 or 8:30 AM and start your morning. Again, it may mean that he is cranky, but after a few days, you will have him napping after lunch and going to bed by 8 or 8:30 at night and he will sleep through the night and you will get to relax yourself! =)
I truly hope this helps you out and that you are able to get some sleep yourself!
A 15 mos old really shouldn't need anything to drink at night. Make having a sippy cup part of the bed time routine and maybe a snack. If he is not sleeping until 10 it has been quite sometime since dinner,
First of all, why are you using distilled water? He needs regular baby water that has floride in it for his teeth. It iwll take him time to learn how to drink out of a regular cup. He has to practice. Keep giving him water in the regular cup even if he dumps...he has to learn. And he won't learn if you don't give it to him. I wouldn't think you are over juicing him but I don't know if deluting it at his age is the best thing either. Have you tried making koolade (sugar free kind)? Or make it yourself with Splenda? Does he get any more milk than just at night? Give him a couple during the day. That will help cut down on all the juice if your worried he is getting to much. Good luck.
at 15 months old you shouldnt be giving that baby anything to drink at night, those fluids are sitting in her teetha nd ultimately going to eventually make her teeth rot, you dont need fluids at night at that age and putting a cup to bed with a child to start with isnt a good idea at any age. ask teh dr im sure they will tell u the same
A 15 month old should be sleeping throught the night by now, but if he wakes up needing a drink you should not give him juice of all things, his teeth will rot out of his head!! If he must have a drink try a BIT of water. Just because something says sugarless, it usually isn't, it is still loaded with a bunch of other crap.
Your little one should by rights sleep through the night by now. maybe he is only wanting the drink because it's sweet though sugarless. Try giving him plain water a little at a time since he is spilling it . Persevere if he cries try water again he will eventually get the message if he is really thirsty he will drink the water . It may take a few nights but you will find he will probably not wake at all after awhile.
this baby may only be waking for the drink if you stopped it hed have nothing to wake for and will sleep through, oh and anything with fruit in is not sugarless fruit sugar is as harmful as cane sugar to teeth
He should be sleeping through the night at 3-6 months of age. Don't give him anything at night. Water is best if you do, as his little teeth can get cavities if he gets anything else, even milk. The sugar in the milk etc. does not get washed down by swallowing at night, and it sits on the teeth. Don't let him sleep with a bottle unless it is water. Slowly ween him off of waking up at night. First night, let him drink only two times for a couple of times, by a week and a half, no feeding. He automatically wakes up, as you feed him at those times. Let him cry. Train him that way. After two and a half weeks, you can finally get the sleep you deserve. Good luck.
