My son has Excema?

What do we do if we have had tests done on our 2.5 year old and hes is not alergic (spelling?) to anything but still gets excema. We don't know what's causing it. Any Help??

Answer:
As far as I know, excema is genetic but can be aggravated by environmental factors and stress. I suffer with excema & dermatitis. The worst culprits for me are detergents (shampoo, bath soaps, laundry soap and so on). Even the ones that I'm not allergic to can make my excema worse so I try to go with the most gentle ones. Since I inherited excema from both my parents I believe I will always need prescription treatments. There is no "cure" for excema. My last visit to the dermatologist was just last week and I finally got a steroid cream that REALLY works for me. The tube says Triamcinolon 0.1% ointment. This has been a miracle for the blotchy, red dry areas and the cracked, peeling areas that get too much skin built up on them.

Aquaphor is available over the counter at Wal-Mart. It's expensive but the best non-prescription emollient I have found. Sam's Club pharmacy carries big jars of it for $13 or the tubes are about $8.50 at Wal-Mart.

Pay close attention to any area that gets extra skin build-up. Manage excess skin build-up with soaks, scrubs, pumice stones, foot files or whatever works best for your child, and keep those areas softened with an emollient like Aquaphor or with your dermatologist's ointment.

My dermatologist told me at this last appointment that my husband's froofy bath products are the most likely aggravation of my excema in recent times. Even though I don't use them, they linger in the tub and get me later. Even if you do your child's laundry in a special detergent, YOUR detergent will remain in the washer and irritate him later. If you switch laundry products, you must do it for ALL the clothes being washed in your machine.

Good luck with everything!
do you own a cat? when i was younger the doctor couldnt work it out. But as soon as our cat died, my excema cleared right up. Our cat used to come inside a lot so maybe they leave something in the carpet or something? Maybe you have a pet like that?
I have it also keep his skin moistourized with lotions or try sarna its at your local drug store its just for that
My daughter has had excema since she was very little. It turns out she has asthma too - many people believe the two to appear in children together. So, please keep an eye out for that. I always know when her asthma is going to act up, because her excema flares.

Some people just HAVE it - without a known cause. A couple of lessons I learned in the last 7 years: AVOID anything with lanolin. I bought a very expensive brand of lotion, recommended by a friend who had dry skin, and it turned my poor baby girl into a lobster, she was so red from inflammation. AVOID letting your son get dried out. lotion every day, (morning & night).

Have him drink LOTS of water. OATMEAL baths when flareups happen - Aveno is great. The best daily lotion for us was Curel - with cortisone cream for severe flare ups. I have been using Taro base (the base cream used for medicated creams - purchased at the pharamcy) It seems to contain mild flare ups... but my jury is still out on that one.

Good luck!
When my little one had eczema, we used this lotion--Cetaphil. You can use it either as a lotion or as a soap. It's gentle and moisturizing and fixed it for us. I think sometimes it goes away on its own as they grow up, so don't get too worried yet. Good luck!
you don't have to be allergic to anything to have eczema my little sister used to have it and my mom got rid of it by giving her a bath every day and directly after her bath she would rub her down with baby oil and sometimes baby lotion it took a couple of years for her skin to be normally smooth but it worked. try that and see if it works for you. best of luck
There is no definite cause of it. Most people have eczema due to an allergy, but that's not always the case. They usually grow out of it. Have you tried Elidel. That's what my 3 yr old son uses and he's had it since he was born, but it isn't very bad. My 12 yr. old step son also has it. It flares up really bad sometimes. He uses Protopic everyday of his life cause it never fully goes away. He went to someones house and stayed the night once, and they use Febreeze on their furniture all the time. The next day he came home red and broke out from head to toe. He also gets sick when it's like that. One thing you can do is to use a skin cleanser like, Aveeno or something that doesn't dry out. They also make cleansers that contains no soap at all that's good to use. Make sure the water is only warm, cause the hotter the water the more it dries the skin. And you can try an oatmeal moisturizer as soon as you get him out of the bath. And stay away from showers when he gets older cause all the skins natural oils just wash down the drain, whereas when you take a bath the oils get back on the skin. Sorry so long. This comes from years of dealing with eczema.
My son also has eczema and the doctors told us to put a humidifier in the house to keep the air moist. We also bath him in dove moisturising body wash and lotion him after bath with Vaseline intensive care lotion. He also still has to have all his clothes washed in dreft and his softener and dryer sheets have had to stay the same kind I used on him when he was a new born because if I change them he breaks out. I also have to make sure he never eats pears. Foods can cause a out break.
I actually just took my baby to a Naturopathic doctor about eczema because my regular doc's answer is to simply apply cortisone cream (and that is not a long term solution and just masks the underlying problem). She said that eczema originates from imbalances in the digestive system. Her suggestion to me was to give probiotics (I use an infant blend powder found in a health food store and mix in yogourt-following dosage on bottle), omega 3 oils (find a good pharmaceutical grade oil that has been tested to be free of contaminants), and she gave me a couple of homeopathic remedies (one was a tissue salt). They are just tiny tablets that they can dissolve in their mouth. Anyway, I took her just last week and her eczema has already improved quite dramatically. A few of the heavier patches still remain although they also look much better. I would try to take your child to a naturopath. In my opinion, and nothing against allopathic or traditional docs (my brother and his wife are both doctors) but they don't seem to have any answers on how to treat it other than with the cortisone. Cortisone thins the skin and isn't healthy to continue using.even the doctors know this but they don't ever have any other suggestions. I find naturopathic doctors take the time to find the underlying cause.

Also, try to use all-natural soaps that are unscented like those you would find at a health food store. I think that the synthetic colorants and fragrances also contribute to eczema. Also, I would try to wash his clothes in a scent-free detergent and pu them through and extra rinse. No fabric softener either.
Good luck!
Yes, all my children had excema and now are outgrowing it after about the age of 4. They all had it on their faces and in the creases of their elbows and their legs. Let me give you my several year experience advice about it. First, get the excema under control with a cortisone cream, (try to get a prescription from your pediatrician). Use this twice daily until it seems better or is gone. Then continue to work on preventing it - bathe him daily with no soap, except for some mild shampoo for his hair. When you take him out of the bathtub, dry him and IMMEDIATELY put Aquaphor ointment on his trouble areas or on his entire body - it's a great mosturizer, you can buy it in the drugstore or grocery. Use this ointment twice daily. Also, use non perfumed detergents and soaps. This is a bad time of year for excema if you live in a cold climate. The skin gets so dry with the weather, so keep him constantly moisturized with the Aquaphor. Also, remember that allergy testing cannot always find mild food reactions such as milk allergies and wheat allergies. Talk to your Dr. about trying an elimination diet.

Also, it is common that children with excema often times have asthma as well (as mine do), so watch out for that when they get a cold or respiratory infection. Good luck, and chances are your son will outgrow this in a year or two.
No soap in baths, or try something like Tone it shouldn't irritate him. Try to keep him from scratching, I have had a niece and a nephew who had it, eucerin cream and watch that scratching, they both grew out of it, so i'm sure yours will too.
Can you try perderm 0.05? and moisturize it with Lipobase Cream. Ive tried this to my son and his exzema is gone now.
Theres some great advice here. I suggest you try some of these .I also heard that people who get eczema have thinner skin than other and that's why it dries out so much. Yes try to keep the skin moisturised I bath my kids in a bit of baby oil at times and avoid bubble baths and heavily scented soaps, The pharmacy has plenty of no soap washes like QV or Hamiltons if in Australia which also work well.
My daughter had it from birth, I used elecon ointment for the bad patches. bathed her in QV oil and Dermeze all over her. Dermeze worked wonders and it only costs about $6 from the chemist. I don't need the cortisone cream anymore.
Make sure he has seen a dermatologist. He might also be able to get something to help with the itching.
i ectually have excema and i havent had it in a long time first use wht the doctor gave u i think i used something that sounded like excema (havent had it in awhile plus im just 11 lol) then once it was gone i had to make sure i kept my hand moist cuz if there not they get REALLY dry (as u probably know) excema never goes away but u can prevent from having it itch by keeping it moist like i said

Hope this helps!
Hi our son has excma too, and we have found QV flare up bath oil fantastic to settle bad excma down, then keep it down with their plain bath oil.
We think its playing on the grass which makes his flare up, and at the same time impossible to keep him off it. Our doctor also said to avoid sand and soap.
The bath oil is available at chemists, its about $20 a bottle, but absolutely worth it
good luck
My son had eczema when he was born and it was on his right cheek. It was very bad and i used hydrocorisone for few days and when it get better, i started using emolients. then i started searching the web for good moisturisers and i found aveeno bath oil and eucerin moisturising lotion. Since then i have been using these two things on his body and face. He did had eczema on his arms and legs. I would suggest you to use eucerin and aveeno bath oil all together. It worked for him and i hope it will work for you kid.Any questions email me at monavi2000@yahoomail.com
An allergy is not necessarily the cause of excema, it is usually something unrelated to any type of contact with a substance be it wool, cotton, linseed oil, etc. More than likely it is just a hereditary predisposition to the skin disease. My mother and a few cousins have it and now it seems that my skin dries more than it use to. When my mom would have an outbreak she would make a sab with a mineral oil plus cornstarch. It creates a typoe of ball substance when mixed properly it's kind of doughy in consistancy but it will not breai apart, the mixture sooths the skin irritation while helping to increase moisture content. I have seen it work miracles on people sufering from the ailment.

I have a neice and my baby sister both have excema and they are treated with a cream that has a steriod in it. Also, keeping the area clean is a must as well. Keep it moisturized too. One more thing, don't let him pick at it because I do believe that excema itches and it gets worse and not better. Talk to a dermatologist and see. And you''re welcome
STOP USING SO MUCH CORTISONE! It's not good for you liver when consumed in such large quantities. My sister has really bad excema but the ocean is the best thing for it...go at night (when theres less UV rays) and just be inside the water for as long as possible (1 hour...the more the better)
