Average weight of 15 month old?

I took my son to the doc for his 15 month old check up. He weighs 21 pounds 8 ounces, his doc seems to think that he is under weight, he also has hypothyroidism for which he takes synthroid daily. His doctor thought that it would be a good idea for him to stop drinking whole milk and start drinking pediasure 3 times a day to help him gain some weight. My question is this, how much does the average 15 month old weigh and has any one had to give their child pediasure and does it work?

Answer:
He sounds normal to me. The average weight of a 15 month old would be between 20 and 30 lbs. I'm not sure about giving him Pediasure instead of milk. Maybe once a day. Pediasure will actually cause his teeth to rot (No Kidding!) so I'd keep him off of that as much as possible.

Maybe get some more carbs and protein in his diet. Give him things like pasta and red meat.
My 15 month old weighs 18 lbs and is also under the 5th percentile, but she eats like a hog. I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as he's eating well. My daughter didn't really like pediasure and it was pretty pricey.
Your son should weigh about 12 kg or or 25-26 pounds.
While is is underweight, as long as he is showing steady growth, that would be the most important thing. Most people who are hypothyroid are overweight, so if he is on too much synthroid, that could also be his problem Better to get a good idea of what his dose should be and adjust if necessary, before forcing him to gain weight. Also, does he have any other hormone inbalances that could be leading to his low weight?
My 15 month old weighed 20.4 pounds at his checkup on Dec 5 and he's in the 5th percentile---and as states above--he eats CONSTANTLY! At one year old he weighed 18 pounds.

I tried to supplement with pediasure, but my son didn't like it. They told me that if I had to, I could put chocolate syrup in up to 24 oz of his milk each day--because he needs the fat content and calories of the milk (and syrup is sugar free--don't buy the pre-made chocolate stuff). They said do whatever it took to get the calories in him.

Then, they think he may have a milk allergy, so he's on soy milk now. (and he has asthma)....So, long story short--your baby sounds small, like mine.so it's important to get the calories in him however you can.

I also use a yogurt that's made with whole milk as a way of adding fat to his diet--it's called yo-baby.

I do know of kids who take pediasure in addition to milk and it has helped them put on weight. Keep in mind too---that this doesn't mean your baby will always be small---he's walking and doing more, hence using more calories.so find little ways to up his intake.

Good luck--I know your pain!
An infants birth weight should double at 6 mos. and triple by one year, so triple the birth weight and a little above that should be an appropriate weight for your child
My 15 month old is 24 lbs. and 31 inches tall and the doctor says he's perfect so that sounds right depending on how tall he is.
hypothyroidism is when you are overweight and your metabolism is slowed down...why is he on that? He should weigh between 22-30 lbs. My son is 16 months old and 29 lbs and very healthy
1) According to the CDC growth chart a 15 month old should weigh between:

19 & 30 lbs (ish, they are kinda hard to read)

2) Hypothyroidism is a serious medical condition that needs to be treated with medication

So ummmm I guess I am saying your doctor is a dumb@ss and you should find one who listens to you. If you think your son is ok, he is ok. If you don't take him to someone who will run some tests, just in case. It *could* be that he just isn't eating enough (running on the assumption he actually should be weighing more, maybe based on what he used to weigh) or he could have a serious medical condition like a thyroid problem or vitamin deficiency.
my daughter just turned 15 months on the 28th and she weighed 27 (by a home scale) on that day. She's always been in the 95 - 100 percentile range for weight, but she's also 34 inches long. try to up the dairy in babys diet - yogurt, yogurt drinks, cottage cheese and things like that. pasta, potatoes, oatmeal, cream of wheat and rice are good for trying to put on weight too. remember the Carbs!
My 20 month old weighs 27 pounds and has weighed that since about 15 months old. I would follow the doctor's advice if you trust this doctor... if not I would get a second opinion from another doctor.
