Is this a home daycare? If it isn't then if it's accredited I believe that all employees have to have a background check to work there and that it should be liscensed. I think you can check with the dept. of education...they should at least be able to direct you if they can't check for you.
hi, i have been where you are now, i teach cpr and first aid to most of the day cares in my city, and it was pretty scary. none of them would i have put him in. first thing to do , is to show up unannounced, and just observe. how many children? the conditions and space available, if they are being attended to etc... you can also ask the owner if they do back ground checks, if not then stay away. it will be hard for you to do , unless you have there full names and birthdays, but you can try calling your police dept. to see what the laws are. also one rule of thumb is, and it is not a fair one, but if there are males working there, find out why? such as are they in school for a child specialty. i stayed clear of those,. but check out as many as you can, and make sure the day care is state licensed, they are more strict with the guidelines then the home care ones. i hope this helps. and Good luck.
For the license number, contact your state Welfare Department (they should have listings of centers who are licensed) or the Licensing agency (Department of Education or Human Development will have this info). If this center is licensed, they must perform a mandatory child abuse index check and an FBI background check on each person working in the center. So, if the center is licensed, you can pretty much guarantee that the people working there have passed a background check- but you can always ask the licensing agency if there have been an abundance of calls or concerns noted on the daycare. You can also call the Better Business Bureau to see if calls have been made about the center. In California, where I work in a center, I have been fingerprinted about 5 times for various jobs and credentials I have applied for. This redundancy is in part to track people who work with children (to find out where they are) and to make sure that they can still pass the fingerprint checkpoint. Hopefully, if it is a good center, they follow all procedures and are only hiring people AFTER they have been cleared by the fingerprint check.
