I can't get my 4 year old to swallow his medicine. Do other parents have any tips?
Answer:
if he is 4, he should be able to take singular, or zyrtec like my son. they are chewable and he eats them with no problem.
you can try the flavorings, or put it in chocolate milk and make sure he drinks it.
when my younger son was a baby, they thought he had
a problem and put him on this awful tasting and smelling med that he threw up. i decided as a parent, it wasn't worth it and i wasn't going to give it to him anymore. his problem stopped on its own a few mos later and i didn't have months of stress and turmoil. sometimes you have to make decisions against doctors orders for the sake of your child. you are the parent. doctors can say what will work but they don't have to shove the meds down your child's throat. go with your gut. ask for another asthma medication. mine also can take pulmicort respules (by nebulizer) or albuterol if needed. there has to be another solution.
this medication solution is NOT working for your family. i would demand another option or change docs.
In Pharmacies like walgreens they sell medicine flavoring..
it makes the medcine taste slightly good [never tried it]
maybe he just fdosent like the taste..
maybe you can mix it up with his water or something.
I agree with Victoria. If it is the flavor that is causing him to gag and throw it back up, try having flavor added at the pharmacy (most major ones have it - Walgreens, Wal-Mart, etc.). If you can't get flavor added, ask the pharmacist if it can be added to his juice. That is what I do with my daughter's Zyrtec. She doesn't notice the difference. Good luck!
Doctors say your not supposed to do this but it might work as long as you can still measure it correctly. Lem him see you put chocolate syrup in the syringe first and then put in the medicine, tell him to get the chocolate out he has to tke the medicine first. Or give him a popsicle to suck on after to keep his through from getting that gag reflux. Hope this helps.
