My 3 year old daughter doesn't know her ABCs, is she behind?

My daughter is almost 3 1/2. She knows only a few of her ABCs, she can't sing the song right. She also doesn't seem to know her numbers either. She was in daycare up until the end of January. Now she stays home with me and we work everyday trying to learn them but she just gets up and does something else after a few minutes. I've worked with toddlers before, and I've seen some 2 year old who can sing the ABCs and count blocks or toys. Could my daughter be a little behind?

Answer:
I don't think it's a big deal -she'll learn them when she needs them. If it's important to you that she learn it now make sure that you make learning into a game and not a chore. Keep a toddler's short attention span in mind when planning activities. An activity can be as simple as counting steps as you walk upstairs or counting buttons as you do them up. Don't worry - we hurry our children far too much! She just wants to play right now!
Yes. As a rule she should probably be pretty good at identifying letters, remembering rhymes, etc. Day care is NOT where she should be expected to learn it. She needs time with loving parents in order to learn to love to learn... It has to come from you when she isn't tired and when you both are happy. It has to be every day.

On the other hand. other than the trend that has been set so far, she has plenty of time to catch up, and kids all learn at different speeds. They grow at different times. The each have unique skills and talents. One thing that is VERY important. more important than letters is MUSIC. The math/music part of the brain can only be easily developed starting at about her age for a few more years. After about 10 years old, if she doesn't have it, she won't get it. This includes logic, critical thinking, reason, problem solving abilities. The best way to stimulate that area of the brain is to start now letting her play with and have access to instruments... a piano or electronic keyboard is a good place to start. Never discourage music even if the noise drives you crazy... It is a very very important part of the development of the mind. Language is another thing best learned when young... Sounds like spoken french, spanish, german, chinese are difficult for the adult ear and brain to pick up. The written rules are easy as an adult, but the sounds, the pronunciation is only easy for kids.

So spend the time, have fun, love your daughter, give her all the opportunities she needs to expand her mind, and don't worry...
my son is two he knows all of his letters, numbers, can count to twenty and say his abc's so, there is this situation.
Yours may be different.
She is not behind because every child learns differnetly

but try making notes cards with letters and numbers, and play games with them, she will learn faster,

GOOD LUCK
remember that every child develops differently, but if you are seriously worried take her in to the doctor. they can test her to see if she's developing at a normal rate. and it will put your mind at ease. good luck
I hope not!! My daughter is 29 months and she just kinda makes up her own alphabet still. She counts, sorta, to 10, though she still struggles past 5. If your daughter is, then I guess mine might be too.
You should spend a lot of time with your child and at least turn of all of the televisions, computers, and everything like that all away for at least one day for you can teach you child the ABC's.Imagine all the kids in the streets never having anything or even a house...and they are always hoping for a better life, well if you take my advice maybe it will help
my 4 year old son can say his abc's but he doesn't know them when he sees them. he can only count to 10. i think every child is different. don't worry.
No, she's not behind.

Ages 4-5 is when kids usually learn the entire alphabet and numbers.
Mine's 3.5. She knows her numers and can add up to 3. i.e 1+1=2 and 1+2=3.
She knows the ABC song and has done since she was about 2. But to say she comprehends letters is an overstatement. She does a lot of pretend reading and writing. That doesn't help in trying to teach her. She can write number 1,2 and 4. But only the size of A4 paper.
She can do a follow-the-dot perfectly and colour inside the lines. Maybe she wants more fine motor control before she starts attempting letters. That's my thought on it.
I sort of leave it up to her. I have faith she will get the hang of it by the time she starts school. And that is what really matters to me.
if your worried try the leap frog toy its a really cute Leap Doll and every time you press him he sings the abc's kids love carrying them around and even if she isnt paying attention she will still be subconciously absorbing the info and the doll is only 10 at walmart at best she will learn the abc's if not she will have a very cute and cheap doll to carry around win-win if you ask me
