Answer:
I have the same problem with my 2 year old. What I did is bought a second tooth brush for her and one for me to use. I let her start then while she runs hers under the water she opens her mouth to let me brush too. And we just go back and forth. The other thing that works but is messy is to let him brush your teeth while you brush his. I hope this helps.
Try one of the fun electric brushes that spin...or the new ones that play music (he has to brush until the song on the brush is over)
You really have to make a game out of it. Tell him that you are going to play dentist and that you are the dentist and that you are going to check his teeth. Then when he opens his mouth say "oh oh" looks like you have a cavity! Explain to him that cavities are like really bad bugs and say to him taht only is "mommy" brushed them off they will go away. I know that it sounds weird but it works trust me.
Try the agent blue mouth wash. It will turn their teeth blue. I bought it for my kids and they love it.
First, allow him to brush his teeth. Then, compliment him. Tell him that you need to check to see if he did a good job. Say he missed a spot and you brush it.
MY son was the exact way, i got him one of those cheap battery powered brushes and with his teeth going yellow that is Early sign of tooth decay if it already hasn't started, My son had to got to dentist for same reason and he brush his teeth every day,, take care of it now before it's to late,, and don't worry it's not your fault i found out some children just have very weak enamel..
You make a reward chart. Let him go to the store, pick out some stickers he likes and a fun toothbrush. Then you get an hour glass that is for like two minutes. Tell him that if he brushes his teeth the whole time he gets a sticker. Then when he gets twenty stickers he gets to make cookies with you or buy a new toy.
They have new rinse now that turns the plaque blue on your kids teeth. Have him look in the mirror and brush until the blue is gone.(Check it out: http://www.agentcoolblue.com/)

Buy a battery operated toothbrush...they really do a better job than ordinary toothbrushes. Perhaps that would do a lot more work for your son as he moves it around on his teeth.

You can each brush at the same time & explain what your doing while you brush. Kids are great imitators.
(i.e., Say "I gotta brush this side.now I gotta brush the other side."

Or play it like a game .Your turn-My turn.(if you play this game with other activities too.like stirring the pancake batter for dinner, he'll enjoy it & it won't be a control issue).say "Let's brush teeth. First it's your turn." Let him brush your teeth.he'll think it's hilarious.
Then say, "Now, it's my turn." And you brush his teeth.
When you're done, both look in the mirror and ask "Did we do a good job? Wow we did a super job! Thanks for helping me, you're such a big boy!"

I have the same problem. The only thing that works for us is to let him brush his teeth and then give him my toothbrush and ask him to brush my teeth, while he brushes mine, i brush his. Good luck!
I feel you on this one my 1 year old want brush her teeth either i know its kinda early but i like to start early. but anyway. She more so swallow the toothpaste instead of spiting it back out. But you should let him see you brush your teeth and tell him to let you show him how to do it and then let him do it his self. see if that works.
take him to a dentist..don't give up
