1 year old extremely congested, lasted 2 weeks?

My 12 month old has been sick with a head cold for 2 weeks now. He sounds so bad when he breathes that I thought he might have an infection. But I took him to the dr. twice already and the doc said it was nothing more than a cold and since my son doesn't know how to cough/spit or blow it out then its going to last awhile. Plus my 2 yr old also has a cold, so the dr. said it would probably keep cycling a few times, b/t the two of them. I am just looking for something (meds?) or some way I can alleviate his symptoms. I am giving him some medicine the dr. gave me which was a sample of a decongest. stronger than you will find over the counter. However, it hasn't seemed to work very well. I am open to suggestions. My little one is not complaining but I can tell he is uncomfortable. Besides, it seems like he is going to have this cold forever!

Answer:
tylenol cold and a booger sucker is all you need a vicks humidifier works wonders also.
Take the baby to a doctor and let him take care of the situation, I know how uncomfortable the baby is with that congestion.
I did this with my 2 sons...Vics Vapor Rub on their chests and we would sit in the bathroom running hot water to breathe the steam while I read them a book. Use a nasal aspirator to help the 12 month old eliminate some of the mucus from their nose and have fun teaching the 2 year old how to blow his nose.

Good luck!
I used the little colds on my newphew and it really helped him. Also get a humidifier and let it run. I got one at target for $30 and that made the most difference especially at night.
my 16 month son has been congested for almost a week. i bought one of those plug in vaporizer night lights. it helps him sleep a little better at night, and lasts longer than the vapo-rub. you can buy them at walgreens for sure... probably walmart, too.
I would give him as much fluid as possible. Water is good for loosening that stuff up.
A couple of suggestions:

1) Wash his hands constantly.
2) Use antiviral tissues to help keep the germs down.
3) Use a humidifier.
4) Either shower soothers or the vicks plug ins work well to alleviate congestion without medicating.
5) Simply saline is a very fine spray that is easy to use in young children. It will help with nasal drainage.

The only thing you can do is try to keep them comfortable, which is an impossible mission when they are that young. When the congestion is really bad with my kids I sit them in a steamy bathroom and read for awhile. It helps.

Some of the medications on the market can be dangerous for young children so I wouldn't do anything unless your doc says so.
Yes being deeply congested can last a long time. Maybe you need to give the decongestant the doc gave you for a longer time. Have you tried those vapor plugs or I think vicks makes a rub for kids. Other than that you'll probably have to wait it out. You can really only treat the symptoms.
colds only last for a few days.
if i were you, I'd make an appointment with a new doctor and see what he has to say.
you are the one looking out for your child. if you don't do it no one else will.
better to be safe than sorry.
my daughter had very bad asthma when she was very young. her Dr. had her in the hospital for almost a month and she wasn't getting any better. usually she would be home in a matter of 3,4 5 days at the most.
i took her out of the hospital and took her to another Dr. it turned out that she had a very serious case of pneumonia in both lungs. she was in the second hospital for an additional 3 weeks.
most doctors are over worked and really aren't paying that much attention to what they consider to be every day kinds of problems.
YOU ARE THE MOM. YOU MAKE THE DECISIONS FOR YOUR KIDS!
first of all let me say this my daughter has been going through the SAME exact thing congestion cough runny nose stopped up nose weezing she has if all she is only 18 months but has had this problem since birth at a month old i took her to the dr and they told me it was just a cold i had her in the emergency room that night cuz she wasnt keeping her formula down they told me she had rsv well they had to hospitalize her and she still has breathing problems to this day dr just informed me that more than likely she has asthma if your baby keeps being like that and no meds are helping tell your dr you want to try breathing treatments like albuteral or pulmacort secondly a humidifier isnt good to use i was told by an er dr that they help but the humidity causes mold which causes worse breathing problems hope this helps you sorry so long
use nose drops. all you do is drop a couple drops into the nostral. sqeeze the aspirator, stick it is the the nose, let the aspirator go to suck all the junk out, clean it out and do it again.
