Funky Toenails in toddler?

My son was born with "funky" toenails, its his big toe and little toe on both feet. The nails are thick and yellowish and now I have to use adult trimmers on him since baby trimmers don't open wide enough. These nails don't grow a ton. He was BORN this way, I noticed it when he was about 3 hours old. My other 2 kids and my hubby and I have normal nails, no one has nail fungus. I have told his doctor who asked if other family members had it (indicating fungus) but when i told him he was born that way and no one else had it the doctor was stumped too. I have declined further testing or treatment (at this time) with antifungals because its not practical for a 2 yr old, it would be monthly bloodwork and pain that is not cool with me. If it bothers him when he's old enough to choose I will do the treatment, but it may not even work since we aren't even sure what is causing this.
Has anyone seen this before?
Its not hurting him, its just ugly. Thanks!

Answer:
Take him to a good dermatologist if your current doctor is stumped, sounds like you need to talk to someone who is a little more experienced in that area. Kids don't normally get nail fungus, it's mainly an adult issue. Bad toenails can be caused by psoriasis, eczema, pachyonychia, lichen planus, or many other things, not just fungus. There is also a disorder called twenty-nail dystrophy that can cause bad nails in kids, where their immune system attacks the nail roots causing them to grow in messed up. Definantly check with another doctor who specializes in that kind of stuff if this guy can't figure it out. Here are some atlas sites that may give you an idea of what may be wrong.
sounds exactly like fungal toenail, i wonder if you can get it in the womb

you can apply antifungal liquid or vick's vaporub on his toenails but it takes a loooong time to go away, like 8 months or something
ask the doctor if its his urine the yellowing could be his urine it may be his liver has urine in it...
go to the doctor
