Blood tests are very accurate in detecting pregnancy. A weak positive is definitely a positive, you've just found out about it extremely early. False positives from a blood test are extremely rare.

Yes...it is based on the HCG levels in your blood. If you are testing early you may have low levels of HCG.

As was previously mentioned, blood pregnancy tests for HCG. For the past several years the test specifically looks for the Beta subtype of HCG. Many years ago, there were more false results because tests looked at alpha HCG and the alpha molecule is shared with many other hormone proteins.
All places use B HCG tests and can detect pregnancy at 5 units which is very low levels. If the test is positive, greater than 5, the solution is very easy, during the first 12 weeks HCG levels will almost double every 24-48 hours so if there is any question, wait 2-3 days and retest.
