Smoking question..?

Okay, so we know that pregnant women shouldn't smoke because it's bad for the baby.. then I read that it's bad even if the father of the baby smokes.. so, here's my question -- what if the father of the baby's Mom (which would be the grandmother of the baby) smoked while pregnant with the father of the baby? Would that hurt the unborn baby?

My fiance's mom smoked while pregnant with him and smoked throughout his childhood and is still smoking now -- would our unborn baby be safe?

Maybe this is a stupid question, but I just wanted to ask just in case. Thanks!

Answer:
Her smoking does not affect his sperm. There is no residual effect. But once you do get pregnant don't let her smoke around you. Once the baby is born don't let her smoke around your child. And make sure she washes her face and hands after she smokes and before she holds your child. Also i read that smokers should not hold an infant while wearing the shirt they just had a cigarette in. The clothing absorbs the smoke and is just as dangerous as second hand smoke.
Actually there has been some terrific research into this lately. The field is called epigenetics.
